Convert Three Season Porch to Four Season Windows — Insulated Glass In

The porch is the best room in the house from May to September, and you want to use it in January without a space heater fighting single glass.

To convert a three season porch to four season windows, the screens or single-glass porch panels come out and real insulated windows go in, set in framed openings with a sill pan and flashing. JMB Builders measures every opening, reframes where needed and installs across the Twin Cities metro, with the permit pulled. Insulation and heat are separate lines. Priced per opening; photo reply within one business day, or a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per opening, windows supplied
  • Openings framed for real windows
  • Permit pulled when the job needs one

A three season porch is built to keep out bugs and rain, not cold. The openings hold screens, vinyl 4-track panels or single-pane glass, often set straight into posts with no header sized for a window, and the knee wall is thin. Turning it into a four season room means the windows become real insulated windows, and the walls, ceiling, floor and heat have to keep up with them.

This page covers the windows. Each opening is measured, then framed to take a window: new studs, a header where the span calls for it, a sill and a flashed rough opening. Casements and picture units are the usual picks for porch walls because they give the most glass. Glass near the floor or a door gets safety glass where code calls for it.

The rest of the conversion is scope you plan alongside it. Insulating the walls, floor and ceiling is its own page and its own line. Heat is added by a licensed HVAC contractor or electrician. Turning a porch into heated living space usually needs a building permit, and the city may look at the floor framing and footings; when the job needs a permit, we pull it. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

  • The heat source plan, chosen with a licensed HVAC contractor or electrician
  • Photos of each porch wall inside and out, and of the floor and roof edge

What JMB supplies

  • Removal and haul-away of screens, panels and old porch glass
  • Framing of each opening: studs, header where needed, rough sill

  • Interior stops or casing and exterior trim or coil wrap
  • The building permit when the job needs one
  • A quote line by opening, with framing on its own lines

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • How much framing each opening needs to take a real window
  • Window style: casements, picture units or double hungs
  • Glass package and any safety glass
  • Exterior finish around the new windows
  • Insulation of walls, floor and ceiling, quoted as its own line
  • Permit and any inspection items on the porch structure

Send a photo of each porch wall from inside and one of the outside showing the floor and footings, if you can see them.

How long it takes

Framing and windows on a typical porch: a few days once the windows arrive. Insulation, heat and finish follow. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

Situations and options

Windows only, now

Insulated windows go in framed openings and the rest of the conversion follows later. The room will be tighter but not fully heated until walls and floor are done.

Windows plus insulation

Windows, then insulated walls, floor and ceiling, quoted line by line. Heat is added by a licensed HVAC contractor or electrician.

Casement walls

Rows of casements or casements flanking picture units give the most glass and the best air in summer, which keeps the porch feel.

Panels instead of windows

If the room will stay unheated, vinyl porch panels may be all you need. That is a three season job and has its own page.

Convert Three Season Porch to Four Season Windows — Insulated Glass In: questions, answered

What windows do I need to convert a three season porch to four season?

Insulated replacement or new construction windows with low-E glass, the same kind you would put in the house. Vinyl 4-track porch panels and single-pane glass are not enough for a heated room. Casements and picture units are the usual picks for porch walls.

Can I just swap porch panels for insulated windows in the same openings?

Sometimes, but porch openings are usually framed for panels, not windows. Most need new studs, a sill and sometimes a header before a real window can be set and flashed. We look at each opening at the measure.

Do I need a permit to make a three season porch four season?

Usually, because the room becomes heated living space. The city may also look at the floor framing and footings. When the job needs a permit, we pull it.

Will new windows alone make my porch usable in winter?

They help, but most heat in a porch is lost through an uninsulated floor, ceiling and knee wall. A four season room needs insulation and a heat source too. Insulation is quoted as its own line, and heat is added by a licensed HVAC contractor or electrician.

What kind of glass is best for a four season porch?

Low-E insulated glass suited to the porch's sun. A south or west porch benefits from glass that cuts summer heat. Large panes near the floor or a door need safety glass where code calls for it.

How long does it take to put insulated windows in a porch?

Framing and setting the windows usually takes a few days once the windows arrive. The order comes first, and lead time depends on the brand; it is written on the quote. Insulation and finish follow.
