Bedroom Window Replacement — Egress Kept, Quieter, Safer for Kids
Every bedroom has the same old windows: drafty at the bed, rattling when a truck goes by, and a kid's room where the sash slides wide open with one push.

Bedroom window replacement keeps the escape opening at the size the code calls for, makes the room quieter and less drafty, and in a kid's room adds an opening control device so the sash stops a few inches open. JMB Builders measures every bedroom window in person, orders them together and installs room by room across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per opening; photo reply within one business day, or a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per opening, windows supplied
- Egress opening measured before ordering
- Opening stops fitted in kids' rooms

Bedroom windows have a job the other windows do not: in a fire, at least one of them is the way out. So the first thing measured is the clear opening and the sill height, not just the frame. A replacement should never make that opening smaller. Changing a double-hung to a casement often makes it larger, because a casement opens its full width.
The second job is sleep. A bedroom window that leaks air at the meeting rail puts a cold draft across the bed, and thin old glass lets the street in. New insulated glass with a sealed frame stops the draft. Where traffic or a neighbor's dog is the problem, laminated glass on that side cuts noise further.
The third is kids. In a child's room, an opening control device lets the sash open a few inches for air and stops it there, while an adult can release it for an escape. We fit them at install on the windows you choose. Room darkening comes from your own shades or curtains; a new, square frame just lets them fit tight to the jamb.

How it is priced: per opening
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of bedroom windows and their size and style
- Changing style to keep or gain the egress opening
- Laminated or sound-reducing glass on a noisy side
- Opening control devices and how many windows get them
- Second-floor access: ladders, roof brackets or a lift
- Insert vs. full-frame, and rot found at the sill
Send one photo of each bedroom window from inside and tell us which rooms are kids' rooms and which face the street.
How long it takes
Two to four bedroom windows in a day, room by room. You sleep in every room that night. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

Situations and options
Casement for the biggest opening
Opens its full width, so it gives the most escape opening for its size. Seals against a gasket and stays quiet in the wind.
Double-hung to match the house
Keeps the look of the rest of the house. Only one sash opens at a time, so the clear opening is checked before ordering.
Quiet side, laminated glass
Laminated glass in the bedrooms facing a busy road, standard glass on the quiet side. Ordered by opening on the same order.
Kids' rooms with opening stops
A device on each sash that stops it a few inches open. An adult releases it for an escape; it resets when the window is shut.
Bedroom Window Replacement — Egress Kept, Quieter, Safer for Kids: questions, answered
Does a replacement bedroom window have to meet egress?
At least one window in a bedroom has to give an escape opening, and a replacement should not make the existing one smaller. We measure the old clear opening and sill height and check the new unit against it before ordering. The egress page on this site goes through the details.
What is the best window for a kid's bedroom?
One that gives a full escape opening and has an opening control device, so the sash stops a few inches open until an adult releases it. A casement or a double-hung can both work. Warm, insulated glass also keeps a bed next to the window from feeling cold.
Will new windows make my bedroom quieter?
Yes, mostly by sealing the air gaps that let sound in. A tight frame and insulated glass cut everyday noise. For a bedroom on a busy road, laminated glass cuts it more, and it can go only on the windows facing the noise.
Can new windows make a bedroom darker?
The window does not darken the room; your shades or curtains do. What a new window does is give a square, plumb frame, so a room-darkening shade fits tight to the jamb with no light leaking down the sides. We do not install the shades, but they go back up on a frame that fits them.
Do I have to move out of the bedroom while the windows are replaced?
No. Each window comes out and the new one goes in the same day, one room at a time. Beds are covered, the room is vacuumed and the window is locked before we move to the next. You sleep in it that night.
Should I replace all the bedroom windows at once?
It is the easiest way to get matching color and glass, because they come from one order and one measure. The quote lists each opening, so if you want to do the kids' rooms first and the rest later, you can see exactly what each phase is.
