Nursery window replacement means a bedroom window a child will grow up next to: it has to stay at the egress size the code calls for, open only as far as you allow, and stay warm. JMB Builders replaces nursery windows across the Twin Cities metro with the opening control device fitted at install. Priced per window, quoted from photos or at a free in-home estimate, with a reply within one business day.
- Priced per window, one room or the upstairs
- Opening control device fitted at install
- Clear opening kept at the egress size the code calls for

The nursery is usually the smallest bedroom, often upstairs, and it has the one window in the house that gets looked at hardest. Parents want it to open for air and to be an exit in a fire. They also want it not to open more than a few inches once a child can climb onto the sill. And they want the crib away from a cold wall, which in a lot of houses is impossible because the only wall without a door or a closet is the window wall.
Those three wants pull against each other and the window has to handle all of them. A bedroom window is kept at the egress size the code calls for, so the clear opening of the new unit is checked against the old one before anything is ordered. A listed window opening control device, fitted to the sash at install, limits how far it opens day to day while an adult can release it in an emergency. Insulated glass with a warm-edge spacer and foam around the frame raise the glass temperature so the wall near the crib stops being the cold wall.
Most nursery windows are an upstairs double hung or casement. A casement gives the largest clear opening for its size, which matters in a small room where the window is small. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Casement vs. double hung, and the hardware that comes with each
- Insert in a sound frame vs. full-frame with new trim
- The opening control device for the window's style
- Second-floor access: ladders, roof brackets or a lift
- Glass package, including laminated glass for a room on a loud street
- One nursery window vs. all the upstairs bedrooms in the same visit
Send a photo from inside showing the whole window and the floor under it, one from outside, and a close-up of the lock. Say whether the room was a bedroom before.
How long it takes
One nursery window: a morning as an insert, most of a day full-frame, including fitting the opening control device. The room is dusted and ready for the crib the same evening.

Situations and options
Casement for a small nursery
The whole sash swings out, so a small casement gives a bigger clear opening than a double hung of the same size. The crank handle folds flat. A control device limits the swing until an adult releases it.
Double hung to match the house
Where every other window on the front is a double hung. The lower sash gets the control device and a sash lock that is out of a toddler's reach. The clear opening is checked at the estimate.
Warm wall for the crib
Insulated low-e glass with a warm-edge spacer, foam at the frame and a sealed sill pan. The glass stays warmer, the cold air no longer falls off it onto the floor, and the window wall is a usable wall.
Every upstairs bedroom at once
The nursery with the other bedrooms, all with control devices, in one order and one setup. The second and third window cost less than the first.
Nursery Window Replacement — Fall Stops, Egress Size, Warm Glass: questions, answered
Does a nursery window have to be an egress window?
Yes, a nursery is a bedroom, and a bedroom window has to give the clear opening the code calls for so someone can get out, and a firefighter in. When an old bedroom window is replaced, the new one is kept at that size. We measure the existing clear opening and compare it to the new unit's before anything is ordered, so a replacement never makes the exit smaller.
How do I keep a toddler from opening the nursery window too far?
With a listed window opening control device fitted to the sash. It stops the window at a few inches of opening in normal use and releases with two actions an adult can do but a small child cannot, so the window still works as an exit. We fit one made for the window's style at install and show you how it releases and resets.
Can a crib go next to a window?
Safety guidance says keep the crib away from window cords and from a window a child could climb into. On the cold side, a new insulated window changes the picture: the glass stays warm enough that the wall is no longer a cold wall, and no cold air falls onto the mattress. Cordless shades and the control device handle the rest. Where the room is small, the window wall is often the only wall left.
Is a casement or a double hung better for a nursery?
A casement gives the larger clear opening for the same frame size, which helps in a small room with a small window, and it cranks shut against a gasket for the tightest seal. A double hung matches a traditional front and keeps the look of the house. Both take an opening control device. We check the egress size the code calls for against both before you choose.
Can the nursery window be replaced before the baby comes?
Yes. From the day you approve the order, the window takes a few weeks to arrive from the supplier and the install is one day. Tell us the due date and we schedule the install so the room is painted, dusted and settled before the crib goes in. Windows go in year-round, winter included, with the opening closed up within hours.
Will a new window make the nursery quieter?
Yes, compared to an old single pane or a loose double hung. New insulated glass in a frame sealed with foam cuts street noise clearly. For a nursery on a busy road, laminated glass takes it further; it is ordered as part of the glass package and does not change how the window looks.
