Window Opening Control Device Installation — Child Window Stops

You have a toddler and upstairs windows with low sills, and a screen is the only thing between an open window and the ground.

Window opening control device installation puts a stop on upstairs windows so a child cannot open the sash far enough to fall through, while an adult can still release it for a fire escape. JMB Builders installs listed devices made for your window type, double-hung, slider or casement, in Twin Cities homes. We supply the devices or install ones you bought. Priced per window.

Window screens are made to keep bugs out, not to hold a child's weight. A window opening control device limits how far a sash can open so a small child cannot fit through, and it has a release an adult or an older child can work in an emergency. That second part matters: a bedroom window is an escape route in a fire, and a stop that cannot be released turns it into a wall.

The device has to suit the window. Double-hungs and sliders usually get a stop that mounts in the track or a cable device that ties the sash to the frame. Casements get a device that limits the swing or the operator. Many window makers offer a factory device for their own windows, and aftermarket devices are made for the rest. We use devices listed to the industry standard for window fall prevention, follow the maker's instructions, and show you how the release works.

For new windows, code requires these devices or a higher sill on some low upstairs windows. For existing windows they are a choice. Either way, keep furniture and beds away from windows so a child cannot climb up to the sill.

Situations and options

Double-hung and sliding windows

A stop in the track or a cable device between the sash and the frame lets the window open a few inches for air and releases to full opening when pressed.

Casement windows

A device that limits how far the sash swings or how far the operator cranks, with a release so the sash can open fully for escape.

Factory devices for your brand

Many window makers sell a device made for their own windows. Where one exists for your windows, it usually fits cleanest.

With new replacement windows

When windows are being replaced anyway, low upstairs sills can get a factory device ordered with the window.

Window Opening Control Device Installation — Child Window Stops: questions, answered

What is a window opening control device?

It is a device that limits how far a window opens so a young child cannot fit through, with a release that lets an adult open the window fully in an emergency. They are made for double-hungs, sliders and casements. Screens are not a substitute because they are not built to hold a child's weight.

Do child safety window stops block a fire escape?

Listed opening control devices are made so they do not. They have a release that opens the window to full size without tools or a key. A fixed bar, a screw in the track or a nail does block escape, which is why we do not use them on bedroom windows.

What is the difference between window guards and window stops?

Window guards are bars across the lower part of the opening. Window stops, or opening control devices, limit how far the sash opens. On a bedroom window either one has to release for escape. In houses, stops are more common because they are less visible and do not change the opening.

Which windows should get fall prevention devices?

Upstairs windows with low sills in rooms a child uses: bedrooms, playrooms and the window by the top of the stairs. Ground-floor windows over a walkout or a steep drop count too. We walk the house with you and suggest which ones.

Can you install window stops I bought online?

Yes. Send the product name and a photo of the window and we confirm it fits that window type before install day. We install it to the maker's instructions and test the limited opening and the release.

How far should a window open with a child safety stop?

The devices are made to limit the opening to a gap a young child cannot fit through, set by the industry standard they are listed to. The exact limit is set by the device, not by us. We install it to the maker's instructions and test it.
