Window Replacement With Pets and Kids at Home — Dogs, Toddlers, Naps

You need new windows, but there is a dog who bolts for any gap and a toddler who follows every tool.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

Window replacement with pets and kids at home works when the room is closed off while its window is out. JMB Builders opens one room at a time, keeps the door shut or gated, cleans as we go, and saves nurseries and nap rooms for the right part of the day. Across the Twin Cities metro, priced per opening, with a photo reply within one business day or a free in-home estimate.

  • One room open at a time, door shut
  • Nap rooms and nurseries scheduled with you
  • No opening left open overnight
Two-story home with shake gables, new grid windows and a glass-panel entry door under a covered porch

For a few minutes per window, there is a hole in the wall. For a dog, that is a way out. For a cat, it is a way out and a place to hide in the wall cavity. For a toddler, it is a drop to the yard. Everything about running a window job in a house with pets and kids comes back to that hole, and to the tools, screws, glass and foam that come with it.

So the rule is simple: the room we are in is closed. The door is shut, or a gate goes up if there is no door, and the crew works from inside that room. Old sashes and glass go straight out to the trailer, not through the house. Cut-offs, screws and foam are picked up before we move to the next room. Every window that comes out is replaced and sealed the same day; nothing is left open or covered in plastic overnight.

Where it helps is the planning. At the in-home estimate or over photos, tell us where the dog spends the day, which room is the nursery and when naps happen. We write the room order on the quote so the crew starts in the right place. If you are planning a whole-house job, the living-at-home page covers the full week; this page is about the safety side of any size job.

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Where pets will be during the work: a closed room, a crate, the yard or a sitter
  • Nap times, school times and which room is the nursery
  • Furniture, cribs and toys moved back from the windows, or tell us and we help
  • A heads-up on any dog that reacts to strangers or loud tools

What JMB supplies

  • A written room order, nursery and nap rooms placed where you want them
  • The work room's door kept shut or gated while a window is out
  • Drop cloths on floors and plastic over furniture in the work room
  • Old windows and glass carried straight outside, not stored in the house
  • Screws, cut-offs and foam picked up before moving to the next room
  • Every opening set and sealed the same day
  • One contact to call or text during the job

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Number of windows and their size and style
  • Insert into the old frame vs. full-frame replacement
  • Second-story windows that need ladders or staging
  • Interior trim: reuse, new casing or drywall returns
  • Painting, quoted as a separate line, or you paint

Tell us the room order you want with your photos. It goes on the quote so the crew follows it.

How long it takes

Each window is open for a short part of the day and closed before we leave. A few windows usually take a day; a whole house runs several days, room by room.

We walk the finished work with you. If anything is not right, we fix it before we call the job done. Then one invoice, paid by check or direct deposit — no card fees, no payment links.

Situations and options

Dogs

A dog that stays home is best in a closed room on the other side of the house, or crated. We knock before opening any door and keep exterior doors closed behind us.

Cats

Cats hide. Shut them in a room we will not work in that day, and tell us which one. An open window cavity is a place a cat can get into, so we check before closing it up.

Toddlers and young kids

The work room stays shut or gated. Tools are not left in hallways. A gate across the doorway lets kids watch from a distance without stepping into the room.

A newborn at home

Nursery windows can go first, before the baby comes, or be scheduled for a time the baby is out of the room. Saws and drills are loud, so the nap room is placed in the day with you.

Window Replacement With Pets and Kids at Home — Dogs, Toddlers, Naps: questions, answered

Is it safe to replace windows with kids in the house?

Yes, when the room being worked on is closed off. The open window, tools, glass and foam stay in that room behind a shut door or a gate. JMB picks up screws and cut-offs before moving on and sets and seals every window the same day.

What do I do with my dog during window replacement?

Put the dog in a closed room we will not work in that day, in a crate, or with a sitter. Tell us where the dog is so the crew does not open that door. A window opening is a straight path outside for a dog that bolts.

Can windows be replaced with a newborn at home?

Yes. We schedule the nursery window first, before the baby arrives, or at a time the baby is out of the room. Saws and drills are loud, so we plan the noisy rooms away from nap times with you.

How much dust does window replacement make?

Some, mostly from cutting old caulk, trim and foam in the work room. We lay drop cloths, cover furniture in that room and clean as we go. Interior trim cuts are the dustiest part.

How long is a window opening left open?

Only while that window is being swapped, a short part of the day. The old window does not come out until the new one is on site and ready. No opening is left open or covered in plastic overnight.

Should the kids or pets leave the house during window replacement?

Most families stay home. If a dog barks at every tool or a child cannot stay out of the work room, a day out helps everyone, but it is not required. Tell us what works and we plan the room order around it.
