Can I stay home during window replacement? Yes. On a whole-house job JMB Builders works room by room: an old window comes out only when its new one is on site, and every opening is set, sealed and closed before we leave that day. You keep using the house. We agree the room order with you first, around bedrooms, pets and a home office. Twin Cities metro, priced per project.
- Room-by-room order agreed before day one
- No opening left open overnight
- Floors covered in every work room

A whole-house window job runs several working days. Nobody needs to move out for it. What makes it livable is the order: we work in one or two rooms at a time, and an opening is only cut open when the new window is sitting next to it. By the end of each day every window in the house is either the old one or the new one, sealed. Never plastic and tape.
The part people underestimate is the planning. Which room is the nursery, which one is the office with the 9 o'clock call, where the cat hides. We go over that at the in-home measure and write the room order down, so the crew knows on day one which room is first and which one waits until the end.

What you supply
- A list of rooms that must stay usable on certain days (nursery, office, a sick room)
- Furniture pulled back from the windows and coverings down in that day's rooms
- Pets shut in a room we are not working in, or out of the house
- Alarm window sensors noted so you can bypass them on install days
- A spot in the driveway or yard for the windows and the trailer
What JMB supplies
- A written room order before the first window comes out
- Drop cloths or floor runners from the door to each work window
- Old window out only when the new one is on site
- Every opening set, flashed, foamed and closed the same day
- Daily clean-up: vacuum at each window, debris hauled to the trailer
- One person to call or text for the length of the job
- Photos of the finished windows in your job folder
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of windows and how many are full frame vs. insert
- Rooms that can only be worked on certain days, which can stretch the schedule
- Second-story openings that need ladders or staging
- Interior trim scope in each room: stops only, new casing, or drywall returns
- Furniture or built-ins that have to be moved for access
Tell us at the measure which rooms are tied up when. A room order that fits your week is free; extra trips to work around it can add a day.
How long it takes
Inserts run about three to five windows a day, full frame one to three. Most houses take several working days; the schedule is written on the quote with the room order.
How your project works
- 1
Measure and room order
Every opening measured in person. We write the room order with you: which rooms first, which days are off-limits, where pets and the office are.
- 2
Windows arrive
All windows come on one order. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote; install days are set once the order is in.
- 3
Room by room
Floors covered, old window out, new one set in a sill pan, flashed, foamed and trimmed. The room is vacuumed and handed back before we move on.
- 4
End of each day
Every opening closed and sealed. We tell you which rooms are next so you can clear them the night before.
- 5
Walkthrough
We open and lock each window with you and put photos of the finished work in your job folder.
Situations and options
Home office in the house
Your office is done first or last, on a day you pick. Cutting and foam happen outside or in the garage, so the noise in the room is short: old window out, new one in, trim.
Kids at home
Bedrooms are done during the day and closed and vacuumed before bedtime. Tools and fasteners stay at the work window or outside, never left in a room we have finished.
Dogs and cats
An open window and a propped exterior door are how pets get out. Keep them in a room we are not working in that day, and tell us which one so we skip it until last.
Can I Stay Home During Window Replacement? A Whole-House Install Week: questions, answered
Do I have to leave the house during window replacement?
No. Most families stay home the whole time. Each window is out for a short part of the day and every opening is closed before the crew leaves. You lose the use of one or two rooms at a time, not the house.
How long is a window opening left open during replacement?
On an insert install, usually well under an hour per window: old sash and stops out, new window in, foamed and fastened. Full frame takes longer because the old frame is cut out and the opening is flashed. Either way the opening is closed the same day.
Can I work from home while my windows are being replaced?
Yes, with a little planning. Tell us which room is the office and we do it on a day that suits you, first or last. Saws run outside, so the noise in the house comes in short bursts at the window we are on.
What do I do with my dog during window replacement?
Keep the dog in a closed room we are not working in that day, or out of the house. Doors get propped and windows are open for stretches, which is how pets slip out. Tell us which room the dog is in and we leave it until last.
Is it cold in the house when windows are replaced in winter?
Only the room we are in, and only for a short time. We close that room's door, swap the window and close the opening, then the furnace catches up. The rest of the house stays at normal temperature.
Will window replacement make a mess inside the house?
There is some dust at each window, mostly from old caulk, stops and trim coming off. Floors are covered from the door to the window, and each room is vacuumed when we finish it. Old windows and debris go straight out to the trailer.
