Window Replacement While Away From Home — Photos and Video Walkthrough
You will be gone for the winter, on a long trip, or the house is a second home you get to twice a month.

Window replacement while away from home is planned up front: every opening measured in person before you leave, finishes picked and written on the quote, access by key or lockbox, photo updates in your job folder each work day and a final walkthrough by video call. JMB Builders does this for second homes and travelling owners across the Twin Cities metro, priced per project. Photo reply within one business day, or a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per project, every window listed
- Measured in person before you leave
- Photo updates each work day

Some homeowners would rather not be there for the install at all. A snowbird leaving for the winter, a family on a summer trip, an owner whose second home sits empty most weeks. The install itself does not need you; the decisions do. So everything you have to decide happens before you go, and what happens while you are gone is written down.
Before you leave: we measure every opening in person, with you there or someone you send. You pick brand, frame color, glass, grilles and interior trim, and they are written on a line-item quote you approve. We agree the install dates, how we get in (a key, a lockbox code or a neighbor), what to do about pets, alarms and thermostats, and who is your local contact if something has to be seen in person.
While you are away: we work room by room, and every opening is set, sealed and closed before we leave each day. We lock up the way you tell us to; we do not promise more security than that. Photos go in your job folder each work day, so you can see each window as it goes in. When the last window is in, we walk you through every room by video call, operate and lock each sash on camera and write up any punch items. If an opening needs a permit, we pull it.

What you supply
- Access: a key, lockbox code or a neighbor with a key
- A local contact we can call if something needs a person on site
- Alarm, thermostat and pet instructions in writing
- Finish choices made and the quote approved before you leave
- A time for the video walkthrough at the end
- Paint color for new trim — Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
What JMB supplies
- One in-person measure of every opening before you leave
- A line-item quote with every finish written on it
- Install dates set in writing, with any change sent to you the same day
- Room-by-room install, each opening closed before we leave
- Floor protection under each window and cleanup each day
- Photos in your job folder each work day
- A final walkthrough by video call and a written punch list
- Haul-away of the old windows
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of windows, styles and sizes
- Brand, frame color and glass package
- Insert or full frame, opening by opening
- Trips to a second home outside the core metro
- Exterior capping, trim and painting in the scope
- Rot found under sills once the old windows are out
Send photos of every window and tell us your travel dates. The measure is booked before you leave, so the order can go in while you are gone.
How long it takes
Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Once delivered, most houses install in a few working days to about a week, on dates agreed before you leave.

Windows go in room by room on the agreed dates. Each opening is closed before we leave, and photos go in your job folder each day.
- 4
Video walkthrough
We show you every window on a video call, open and lock each sash on camera, and send a written list of any punch items and when they will be done.
Window Replacement While Away From Home — Photos and Video Walkthrough: questions, answered
Can windows be replaced while I am out of town?
Yes, if the decisions are made before you leave. Every opening is measured in person, finishes are written on the quote, and access is set by key, lockbox or a neighbor. Photos of the work go in your job folder each work day, and the final walkthrough is done by video call.
Does someone need to be home for the window measure?
Someone needs to let us in, but it does not have to be you. The measure is in person, inside and out, and nothing is ordered until every opening is measured. Most owners book it before they leave so the order can go in while they are away.
How will I know the windows were installed right if I am not there?
Photos of each window go in your job folder as it is finished. At the end we walk every room with you on a video call, open and lock each sash on camera, and point out any punch items. You can also have a local contact look in person.
Can you replace windows at a second home or lake place?
Yes, across the Twin Cities metro and north toward St. Cloud. A second home is handled the same way as a trip away: measured with access you arrange, installed on set dates, photos each day and a video walkthrough. Travel to places outside the core metro is part of the price.
Is my house left open during window replacement when I am away?
No. We work one room at a time, and every opening is set, sealed and closed before we leave each day. We lock up the way you tell us to. We do not promise any security beyond that, so tell us about alarms and anything else you want handled.
How do I pay for window replacement if I am out of town?
By check or direct deposit, both of which work from anywhere. The payment schedule is written on the quote you approve before you leave, so there are no surprises while you are gone.
