Window Replacement in Spring or Fall? Timing the Order for Minnesota

Window replacement spring vs fall timing comes down to when you sign, not when you want it done: windows are made to order, so a spring install is ordered in winter and a fall install is ordered in summer. Spring gives you a full warm season to paint trim and watch the sealant; fall gets the house tight before heating season. JMB Builders installs year-round across the Twin Cities metro; send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Spring install is ordered in winter; fall install in summer
- Install pace is the same in either season
- Priced per window, windows supplied

Replacement windows are built to your measurements after the order goes in, and the factory lead time is weeks at the quickest and longer for dark colors, fiberglass, clad wood, special glass and anything odd-shaped. Add the measure visit and the install calendar, and the gap between signing and install is a season. So a spring install starts with a winter quote, and a fall install starts with a summer quote. People who call in April for May are usually looking at July.
Spring and fall are both good install seasons and the differences are small. Spring ground is soft, so ladders and lifts need care, and a wet spring can push exterior capping days around; the upside is a whole summer to paint new trim, keep an eye on the sealant and open the windows. Fall is dry, the ground is firm, and the house is tight before the furnace runs every day; the downside is that the trim painting window closes with the first cold nights, so painting is quoted as a separate line or done the next spring, and the fall calendar fills first because everyone has the same idea.
Summer and winter are the other half of the answer. Summer is the busiest season and lead times stretch; winter has the shortest lead times and the most open calendar, and the install works fine done one opening at a time. JMB Builders installs in all four, so the honest advice is to order when you have decided, and let the season fall where it falls. If you want a specific season, back the order date up by the factory lead time written on the quote.

- Your choice of style, material, color and glass, which sets the factory lead time
- A decision on painting new trim: us as a separate line, you, or wait for warm weather
- Clear access to each window inside on install days
What JMB supplies
- The factory lead time for your line written on the quote, with the order-by date for the season you want
- In-home measure of each opening before anything is ordered
- The windows, supplied in the line you pick
- Removal and haul-away of the old windows
- Sill pan, shims, low-expansion foam and exterior sealant at every opening, in any season
- Interior stops or casing, primed; painting is quoted as a separate line, or paint it yourself
- Photos of the finished windows in your job folder
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Window line, color and glass package, which set the lead time more than the price changes by season
- Insert vs. full-frame install at each opening
- Window count, size and second-story access
- Exterior trim or capping, and whether painting is done at install or later
- Whether one urgent window is done now and the rest in the chosen season
Tell us the season you want and send a photo of each window inside and out. The quote lists the lead time for the line you pick so you can see the order-by date.
How long it takes
Factory lead time first, then three to five inserts a day or one to two full-frame, in spring or fall alike. A whole house is a few days in either season.

Situations and options
Order in winter, install in spring
Quote and measure in January or February, windows arrive as the ground thaws, install in April or May. A whole summer to paint trim and watch the sealant. The best way to beat the summer rush.
Order in summer, install in fall
Quote in June or July, install in September or October before the furnace runs daily. Dry ground and firm ladders. Painting of new trim moves to a spring line unless the fall stays warm.
Install whenever the windows arrive
Order when you have decided and take the first install dates. Often lands in a shoulder season anyway, and never waits on a calendar. The right choice when the old windows are failing.
One window now, the rest in the chosen season
A broken or rotted window is replaced as a single unit in the line you want for the house, and the rest are ordered for spring or fall. Both are on the quote so the later windows match.
Window Replacement in Spring or Fall? Timing the Order for Minnesota: questions, answered
Is spring or fall better for replacing windows in Minnesota?
Both are good and the install is the same. Spring leaves a summer to paint trim and watch the sealant cure, with the trade of soft ground and rain days. Fall is dry and gets the house tight before heating season, with the trade that trim painting waits for warm weather and the calendar fills early. Pick by what else is going on at your house, not by the window.
When do I need to order windows to have them installed in spring?
In winter. The factory lead time is written on the quote and runs weeks at the shortest and longer for dark colors, fiberglass, clad wood and special glass. Add the measure visit and the install calendar, and a January or February order is what lands in April or May. A March order usually becomes a June install.
When should I sign for a fall window install?
In early summer. June and July orders arrive for September and October installs on most lines. The fall calendar fills first because everyone wants the house tight before winter, so the earlier you sign the more choice of dates you have. An August order often becomes November, which is still fine to install.
Can new window trim be painted in the fall?
Only while the days stay warm enough for the paint to cure, which in Minnesota usually ends in October. New trim goes on primed and caulked either way. If the install lands late, painting is quoted as a separate spring line or you paint it yourself when the weather turns. Primed trim is fine through a winter.
Does rain or soft ground in spring delay window installation?
A little. Inserts are set mostly from inside and go in rain or shine. Exterior capping, full-frame work and second-story ladders wait for a dry day and firm footing, so a wet week can shift the exterior finish by a few days. We tell you the day before if a day has to move.
Is it worth waiting for a specific season if my windows are failing now?
No. A fogged, rotted or stuck window is costing heat and letting water in every week it waits, and the install works in every season including winter. Order when you have decided. If you want the big whole-house job in a specific season, replace the one bad window now in the same line and schedule the rest.
