How Far in Advance to Book Window Replacement — Measure to Install
You want the new windows in before the kids are home for summer, or before the first cold snap.

How far in advance to book window replacement depends on three waits added together: getting on the measure schedule, the manufacturer's lead time after the order (it depends on the brand and is written on the quote), and the install slot once the windows arrive. For a whole house, start with photos or a free in-home estimate a season ahead. JMB Builders installs across the Twin Cities metro, priced per project.
- Lead time depends on the brand, written on the quote
- Nothing ordered before the in-person measure
- Install days set when the windows arrive

Replacement windows are built to order after the measure. That means the calendar for a whole-house job has three parts you cannot skip: the measure, the factory, and the install. The factory part is the one you have the least say over. It depends on the brand, the line, the color and options like special glass or grilles, and it moves with the season. We write the current lead time for your line on the quote.
Working backward is the simplest way to plan. Pick the week you want the crew in the house. Before that sits the lead time on the quote. Before that, a few days to decide, sign and place the order. Before that, the measure and the written quote. On a big house, give that whole chain a season of room rather than a few weeks.
Dark exterior colors, specialty shapes and triple-pane glass can stretch the factory time. If one window in the order is slow, the whole order waits for it, because we install the house as one job so colors and glass match.

What you supply
- The week or month you want the install, and any dates that do not work
- Your line and options decided soon after the quote, so the order goes in
- Access to the house on install days, room by room
- Painting: quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- A measure of every opening before anything is ordered
- The lead time for your line written on the quote
- One order for the whole house, placed once the quote is signed
- Install days set when the windows are in and checked
- A call if the manufacturer's date moves
- Room-by-room install so the house is never left open overnight
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number and mix of openings
- Line and options: dark exterior colors, special glass, grilles, shapes
- Insert vs. full frame
- Interior and exterior trim scope
- Winter install needs, such as temperature limits on sealants and finishes
Booking early does not change the price on the quote; manufacturer price changes after the quote's good-through date can.
How long it takes
Measure: an hour or two for most houses. Factory lead time: depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Install: several working days for most whole-house jobs.

How Far in Advance to Book Window Replacement — Measure to Install: questions, answered
What is the lead time on replacement windows?
It depends on the brand, the line and the options, and it changes through the year. Dark colors, special glass and odd shapes can add time. We write the current lead time for your line on the quote.
How long does it take to get windows after ordering?
That is the manufacturer's lead time, which is written on your quote. Once the windows arrive and are checked in, we set the install days with you.
When should I order windows for a summer install?
Work backward from the week you want: the install, before it the lead time on the quote, before that the order and the measure. On a whole house, starting in late winter or early spring gives the chain room. Send photos or book a free in-home estimate to get the measure on the calendar.
How far ahead do window installers book?
It changes with the season and with storm work. The measure is usually the quick part; the factory lead time is usually the long part. Ask for both dates when you get the quote.
Can windows be ordered before the measure to save time?
No. Replacement windows are made to the opening, and a wrong size usually cannot be returned. Every opening is measured in person before the order goes in.
Can I book window replacement for winter?
Yes. Each opening is out for a short time and closed the same day, and the room can be closed off while we work. Sealants and exterior finishes have temperature limits, which we plan around.
