How Long Does Window Replacement Take? Order Wait vs. Days on Site

You want to know two things: how long until the windows show up, and how many days the crew will be in the house.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

How long does window replacement take? Two clocks. The factory lead time after you order depends on the brand and is written on the quote. On site, insert windows typically run about three to five a day and full frame about one to three, so most houses take several working days. Rot, second-story openings and stucco or brick slow it. JMB Builders installs across the Twin Cities metro, priced per opening.

  • Lead time depends on the brand, on the quote
  • Inserts: about three to five a day
  • Full frame: about one to three a day
Two-story home with shake gables, new grid windows and a glass-panel entry door under a covered porch

People ask how long window replacement takes and mean one of two things. The first is the wait: windows are built to order after the measure, and the factory sets that clock. It changes by brand, line, color and options, and by season. We write the current lead time for your line on the quote rather than guess here.

The second is the time on site. That part we control. An insert, where the new window goes into the old frame, is the quick one. A full frame, where the old frame comes out to the rough opening, takes longer because the opening gets flashed and the outside trim is rebuilt.

The numbers on this page are typical days, not promises. Your quote states the number of install days for your house, opening by opening.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Your choice of line and options soon after the quote, so the order goes in
  • The week you want the install, and dates that do not work
  • Rooms prepped on the days they are scheduled
  • Painting: quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself

What JMB supplies

  • One in-person measure of every opening before ordering
  • One order for the house so colors and glass match
  • The lead time and the number of install days written on the quote
  • A call if the manufacturer's date moves
  • Room-by-room install, every opening closed the same day
  • Trim, cleanup and haul-away as each room is finished

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Insert vs. full frame on each opening
  • Rot in sills or framing found when the old window comes out
  • Second-story openings that need ladders or staging
  • Stucco, brick or stone around the opening
  • Large mulled units, bays and specialty shapes
  • Interior trim scope: stops only, new casing, or drywall returns

How long it takes

Factory lead time: depends on the brand, written on the quote. On site: about three to five inserts or one to three full frame windows a day.

Situations and options

Insert into a sound frame

Sash, stops and balances out, new window into the old frame, weight pockets insulated, capped outside. Often well under an hour to set, so several a day with trim.

Full frame to the rough opening

The whole old window comes out, the opening is checked and flashed, the new window is set, and the exterior trim is rebuilt. Fewer per day, more per opening.

What slows a day down

Rot under the sill, a second-story window over a roof, stucco or brick that has to be cut and patched, and a big bay or mulled unit. Each adds time to that opening, and we tell you when we find it.

How Long Does Window Replacement Take? Order Wait vs. Days on Site: questions, answered

How many windows can be installed in a day?

For insert windows into sound frames, about three to five a day with trim is typical. Full frame windows run about one to three a day because the opening is flashed and the outside trim is rebuilt. Rot, upper floors and stucco or brick lower those numbers.

How long does it take to replace one window?

An insert window is often set in well under an hour, with trim and cleanup adding to that. A full frame window takes longer, often a good part of the day with exterior trim. A single window is usually one visit.

How long does it take to get windows after ordering?

That is the manufacturer's lead time. It depends on the brand, line, color and options, and it changes through the year. It is written on your quote, and we call you if the date moves.

How long does it take to replace all the windows in a house?

Most houses take several working days on site once the windows are here. The quote lists every opening and states the number of install days. Full frame jobs and houses with many upper-floor windows take longer.

What makes window replacement take longer than planned?

Rot under the sill or in the framing, found once the old window is out, is the most common. Stucco or brick around the opening, second-story access and very cold weather for exterior sealants add time too. We tell you when we find something and what it changes.

Is the house open while windows are being replaced?

Only the window being worked on, and only for as long as the swap takes. The old window comes out when the new one is on site, and every opening is closed and sealed before we leave each day.
