Window Installation Day: What to Expect, Arrival to Walkthrough
The windows came in, the date is set, and the trailer pulls up in the morning.

Window installation day, what to expect: the crew arrives and walks the rooms with you, covers floors, then takes out one old window at a time and sets the new one in a sill pan, flashed, foamed and sealed. Trim goes on inside and out, each room is vacuumed, and you open and lock every window with us at the end. JMB Builders installs across the Twin Cities metro, priced per opening.
- Old window out only when the new one is on site
- Every opening closed the same day
- Floors covered from door to window

An install day has a set order, and it repeats at every window. Knowing it helps you plan where to be, where the dog goes, and when you get each room back.
The short version: one opening is open at a time, for as short a time as the work allows. The new window is already on site before the old one comes out. By the time the crew packs up, every opening is closed and sealed, whether the trim on that window is finished yet or not.
The times below are typical, not promises. A rotted sill, a full frame opening or a second-story window adds time to that window, and we tell you when we find it.

What you supply
- Someone home at the start to walk the rooms and at the end for the walkthrough
- Furniture pulled back and window coverings down in that day's rooms
- Pets in a room we are not working in
- Room in the driveway for the trailer and the new windows
- Painting: quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- A short walk through the day's rooms and the order we will work in
- Drop cloths or runners from the entry door to each window
- Removal of old sash, stops, balances or the whole frame, opening by opening
- Sill pan, flashing, low-expansion foam and sealant at every window
- Exterior capping or trim and interior stops or casing
- Vacuuming at each window and haul-away of the old units
- A walkthrough where you open, close and lock every new window
How it is priced: per opening
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Insert vs. full frame on each opening
- Rot found when the old window comes out
- Second-story openings that need ladders or staging
- Exterior finish: aluminum capping, PVC trim, or new casing
- Interior trim: stops only, new casing, or drywall returns
- Siding, stucco or brick around the opening
How long it takes
Insert windows: often well under an hour each to set, about three to five a day with trim. Full frame: about one to three a day. The quote says how many days.
How your project works
- 1
Arrival and walk-through
We walk the rooms with you, confirm which window goes where, and agree the room order. Questions about alarms, pets or a room you need back get settled here.
- 2
Protect the room
Floors are covered from the door to the window. Furniture that could not be moved gets covered. The saw and the foam stay outside or in the garage.
- 3
Old window out
Stops, sash and balances come out, or on a full frame job the whole frame is cut free. The opening is checked for rot and level before the new unit goes in.
- 4
New window in
Set in a sill pan, shimmed level and square, fastened, flashed outside and foamed inside. We check that it opens, closes and locks before moving on.
- 5
Trim and cleanup
Exterior capping or trim, interior stops or casing, sealant. The room is vacuumed and old units go to the trailer before the next room starts.
- 6
Final walkthrough
You open, close and lock each window with us and point out anything you want looked at. Photos of the finished work go in your job folder.
Window Installation Day: What to Expect, Arrival to Walkthrough: questions, answered
What happens on window installation day?
The crew walks the rooms with you, covers the floors, and replaces one window at a time: old unit out, new one set in a sill pan, flashed, foamed and sealed, then trimmed inside and out. Each room is vacuumed when it is done. At the end you open and lock every new window with us.
Do I need to be home when the window installers come?
It helps to be there at the start, to walk the rooms and settle the order, and at the end, for the walkthrough. In between you can come and go. If you cannot be there, tell us at scheduling and we agree how we get in.
Will there be an open hole in my wall overnight?
No. The old window comes out only when the new one is on site, and every opening is closed and sealed before we leave that day. If trim on a window is not finished, the window itself is still in and sealed.
How noisy is window installation inside the house?
Noise comes in short bursts at the window being worked on: pulling stops, driving fasteners, the vacuum. Saw cutting is done outside or in the garage. A home office can be scheduled first or last in the day.
Should I offer the window installers anything?
No need. A bathroom we can use and a spot to park the trailer are what helps. Tell us if any door should stay closed or any room is off-limits.
What do I check at the end of window installation day?
Open, close and lock every window. Look at the trim joints and caulk lines inside and out, and check that screens are in. Point out anything you want looked at during the walkthrough.
