Replace All Windows Before Winter — Order Dates Set from Freeze-Up
It is late summer or fall and you want every window in before snow. The calendar runs backward from freeze-up, not forward from today.

To replace all windows before winter, work backward from freeze-up: the install weeks you need, minus the window lead time written on the quote, minus a week for the measure. That is when to call. JMB Builders measures every opening, orders the house at once and installs room by room across the Twin Cities metro; late deliveries still go in when it is cold. Priced per project; photo reply within one business day or a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per project, every window listed
- Order date set from the brand's lead time
- Exterior caulk and paint need warm days

A whole-house order is the long pole. Every opening has to be measured in person before anything is ordered, and then the windows take as long as the brand takes. That lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Some lines are quicker than others, which is a fair reason to compare two brands for a fall job.
So the plan is a subtraction. Count the install days your house needs. Count back the lead time. Count back a week for the measure and the order. If that lands in the past, you are not out of luck: windows can go in during the cold. Each opening is open for a short time and closed the same day.
What cold does change is the outside finish. Sealants and exterior paint have temperature limits on the label. When late-season install days run cold, exterior caulk or paint can be scheduled for the first warm stretch, written on the quote so nothing is forgotten.

What you supply
- A call as early in the season as you can
- Brand choices, or a request to price two brands with different lead times
- Quick decisions after the measure so the order goes in that week
- Paint colors — Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
What JMB supplies
- One in-person measure of every opening, booked as soon as you are ready
- A quote with every window listed and the brand's lead time written on it
- One order for the whole house the day you approve it
- Install weeks set on the calendar when the order is placed
- Room-by-room install, each opening closed the same day, cold or not
- Any exterior caulk or paint that needs warmer weather scheduled and written down
- Photos of the finished windows in your job folder
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number and mix of windows
- Brand and series, which also sets the lead time
- Insert vs. full frame at each opening
- Cladding: siding, stucco or brick
- Exterior trim or capping, and whether any of it waits for warm weather
- Rot or framing repair found at the measure
Tell us the date you want to be done by. We check it against the brand's lead time before you sign.
How long it takes
Measure within days of your call; lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote; install runs several working days for a typical house, longer for full frame.

Situations and options
Early fall order
Measured and ordered early enough that install lands before the cold. Exterior caulk and finish go on in one pass.
Late fall order
Install runs into colder days. Windows go in room by room the same way; exterior finish that needs warmth is scheduled for the first warm stretch.
Worst windows before snow
When the whole order cannot land in time, the leaking or broken windows go on a first order and the rest follow on a written plan.
Replace All Windows Before Winter — Order Dates Set from Freeze-Up: questions, answered
Is it too late to order windows for fall?
It depends on the brand's lead time, which is written on the quote. If it lands after the cold sets in, the windows can still go in; each opening is closed the same day. Call early and we will tell you which brands fit your date.
When should I book window replacement in fall?
Count back from when you want to be done: install days, then the lead time written on the quote, then about a week for the measure and order. That date is when to call. For a whole house in Minnesota, earlier in the season gives you more room.
Can new windows be installed when it is cold?
Yes. Each window is out for a short time and the opening is closed the same day, with the room shut off while it is open. Sealants and exterior paint have temperature limits, so some outside finish may wait for a warmer day.
What happens if the windows arrive after the first snow?
We install them anyway, room by room. Snow on the ground slows exterior trim and access to upper windows but does not stop the work. Anything that has to wait for warmer weather is written on the quote with the plan to finish it.
Should I replace a few windows before winter and the rest in spring?
That works when the whole order cannot land in time. The failing windows go first; the rest are measured at the same visit and written down by brand, series and color so they match. A split order usually costs a little more per window than one order.
Does the brand change how fast I get windows?
Yes. Lead times differ by brand and series, and change through the year. We write the current lead time on the quote, and can price two brands side by side if timing matters more than the brand.
