Stainable Wood Interior Windows — Real Wood Inside, No-Paint Outside
Your house has stained oak or pine trim, and white vinyl windows would look wrong in it.
Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.
Stainable wood interior windows have real wood on the room side and vinyl, fiberglass or aluminum outside, so you stain the inside to match your trim and never paint the outside. JMB Builders measures, orders through ABC Supply and installs them across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per opening. Send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per opening, windows supplied
- Pine, oak, maple and more, by line
- Factory stained, or stained on site as its own line

The inside of a window is what you look at every day. In a house with stained casing, stool and apron, a white frame stands out as the one thing that does not match. A wood interior window puts real wood on the room side, and the outside is covered in a material that does not need paint. Which wood, and who stains it, is decided on the order.
The lines split three ways. Andersen's 200 and 400 Series pair a pine interior with a Perma-Shield vinyl exterior; the 200 comes in unfinished pine or factory white, the 400 in natural pine or a few factory colors. Andersen's A-Series offers pine, maple, oak, cherry, mahogany and vertical-grain Douglas fir, with factory stains on pine, maple and oak. ProVia's Aeris puts factory-finished oak, cherry or maple on a welded vinyl frame.
Unfinished wood has to be sealed soon after it goes in so it does not take on moisture. You can order it factory stained, have us stain it on site as its own line on the quote, or stain it yourself. We buy through ABC Supply. Andersen is confirmed at our Minnesota ABC branches; for any other brand we confirm the line with our ABC branch before the quote is final.

How it is priced: per opening
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- The line: pine with vinyl exterior, hardwood with clad exterior, or wood on vinyl
- Wood species: pine costs less than oak, maple or cherry
- Unfinished, factory stained or factory painted interior
- Stain and clear coat on site, as its own line
- Insert or full-frame install for each opening
- New interior casing, or keeping the stained trim you have
Send a close-up of your existing stained trim in daylight. Lead time depends on the brand and the finish and is written on the quote.
How long it takes
Install runs two to four windows a day once the order arrives. On-site staining follows in a separate visit after the units are in.

Situations and options
Unfinished pine, stained on site
Andersen 200 and 400 Series come in natural pine. We stain sample boards first, then stain and clear coat the sash and jambs after install as its own line, or you do it.
Factory-stained interior
Andersen's A-Series offers factory stains (Clear Coat, Honey, Cinnamon, Russet, Mocha, Espresso) on pine, maple and oak. The windows arrive finished, so there is no stain work in the room.
Hardwood to match oak or maple trim
Pine takes stain differently than oak. When the trim is oak or maple, a line that offers that species (A-Series, E-Series, ProVia Aeris) gets closer than staining pine dark.
Wood on a vinyl frame
ProVia Aeris fastens a factory-finished oak, cherry or maple interior to a welded vinyl frame, in 16 stains or 16 paints. ProVia states the wood can be replaced later if you change the stain.
Stainable Wood Interior Windows — Real Wood Inside, No-Paint Outside: questions, answered
Can you stain the inside of new replacement windows?
Yes, if the window has a real wood interior. Lines like the Andersen 200 and 400 Series come in natural pine that takes stain. Vinyl and fiberglass interiors, including woodgrain laminate, cannot be stained. Staining on site is quoted as a separate line, or you can stain it yourself.
Which windows are wood inside and vinyl outside?
Andersen's 200 and 400 Series have a pine interior with a Perma-Shield vinyl exterior that Andersen says never needs painting. ProVia's Aeris puts a factory-finished oak, cherry or maple interior on a welded vinyl frame. Both give you wood in the room and nothing to paint outside.
Will pine window interiors match my oak trim?
Not exactly. Pine and oak have different grain and take stain differently, so the same can of stain looks different on each. If the trim is oak, a line that offers an oak interior gets closest. Either way we stain sample boards of the window species before the house is done.
Is factory stain or on-site stain better for window interiors?
A factory finish arrives done, with no stain work or smell in the house, but you pick from the maker's colors. On-site stain lets us match your existing trim with sample boards first. It is quoted as its own line and done after the windows are in.
Is woodgrain laminate the same as a wood interior window?
No. Woodgrain laminate is a printed film on a vinyl frame, offered on lines like ProVia Endure and Thermo-Tech Thermo-Fit. It looks like wood from across the room and needs no finish, but it cannot be stained to match your trim. A real wood interior can.
How soon does an unfinished wood window interior need to be sealed?
Soon after install. Bare wood takes on moisture from the house, and the bottom rail is where winter condensation sits. We schedule the stain and clear coat right behind the install, or you finish it yourself on your own schedule. Lead time for factory-finished units is written on the quote.
