Replacement Windows With Blinds Between the Glass — Where They Fit
You are tired of blinds that bend, cords that tangle and slats that need dusting, and you have seen the windows with the blind sealed inside.

Replacement windows with blinds between the glass seal a blind or shade inside the insulated unit, worked by a slider on the frame, so there is nothing to dust or wreck. On a Minnesota house they suit kitchens, bathrooms, patio-door sidelites and rooms where a blind gets touched daily; they trade some energy performance and cost more to fix. JMB Builders supplies and installs them across the Twin Cities; send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Blind sealed inside the glass, nothing to dust
- Best in kitchens, baths and high-touch rooms
- Priced per window, windows supplied

A between-the-glass blind is a narrow aluminum blind or a pleated shade built inside the insulated glass unit, between the panes. A magnetic or mechanical slider on the frame tilts, raises and lowers it. The blind never gets dusty, never gets bent, and never hangs crooked. Some lines offer them on windows and on patio doors and entry-door glass, in white and a few neutral colors.
The trade-offs are real. The blind needs room, so the airspace between the panes is wider than a standard unit and the glass package is usually limited to double pane with a low-E coating; a triple pane with blinds is rare. That makes the window a step down in energy performance from the best glass on the same frame, which matters on a north wall and matters less on a bathroom window. And if the blind mechanism fails, the whole glass unit is replaced, since it is sealed. Makers warrant them, but a failed blind is a service call and a wait, not a trip to the store for a new blind.
So we recommend them where the blind gets used every day and a hanging blind gets wrecked: over a kitchen sink, in a bathroom that needs privacy and gets steamed, in a kids' room, on a patio door and its sidelites, in a rental. We talk you out of them on the cold north bedroom wall, on a big picture window where the view is the point, and on a whole house where the energy cost adds up. JMB Builders orders them in the same line and color as the rest of the windows so the house matches, and installs them with the slider side planned so it is not behind a faucet or a cabinet.

What you supply
- The rooms where you want the built-in blind and why: privacy, kids, pets, steam, no dusting
- Blind or pleated shade, and the color from the maker's short list
- Which side of the window you want the operator on, or let us plan it around counters and faucets
- Interior finish and exterior color choices, same as any replacement
What JMB supplies
- A room-by-room recommendation on the quote: between-the-glass blinds where they earn it, standard glass where they do not
- In-home measure of each opening before anything is ordered
- The windows, in one line and color so blind units and standard units match from outside
- Operator side planned so the slider is reachable and not behind a faucet or cabinet
- Removal and haul-away of the old windows
- Sill pan, shims, low-expansion foam and exterior sealant at every opening
- Photos of the finished windows in your job folder
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Blinds-between-the-glass units carry a meaningful upcharge over standard glass
- Blind vs. pleated shade, and shade fabric choice
- How many windows get the blind: a few high-touch rooms vs. the whole house
- Operating style; casements and fixed units take blinds more easily than some double hungs
- Patio door and sidelite glass with blinds, which is priced with the door
- Insert vs. full-frame install
Send a photo of each window inside, with the counter, tub or furniture under it showing, so we can plan the operator side. The quote marks which units have the blind.
How long it takes
Blind units install at the normal pace, three to five windows a day as inserts. They are made to order and carry a longer factory lead time than standard glass, written on the quote.

Situations and options
Kitchen and bathroom only
The blind goes where steam, grease and daily use ruin a hanging blind. Everything else gets standard glass in the same frame and color. The most common way these are ordered and the easiest to justify.
Kids' rooms and the family room
Rooms where blinds get bent, cords get pulled and slats get climbed. The sealed blind cannot be reached and has no cord. Pair with a window opening control device upstairs for a fall-safe room.
Patio door and sidelites
Blinds between the glass on a sliding or hinged patio door and its sidelites remove the vertical blind that always breaks. Ordered with the door, matched to the windows in the same room.
Pleated shade instead of a blind
A fabric pleated shade sealed between the panes raises and lowers but does not tilt. Softer look, a few colors, and the same no-dusting benefit. Good in bedrooms where you want a full blackout-style closure.
Replacement Windows With Blinds Between the Glass — Where They Fit: questions, answered
Are windows with blinds between the glass less energy efficient?
Somewhat. The blind needs a wider airspace and the unit is usually limited to double pane, so the glass package is a step below the best triple pane or high-performance double pane on the same frame. In a kitchen or bathroom that difference is small in real life. On a cold north bedroom wall or a big picture window we would steer you to standard glass and a regular blind.
What happens if the blind inside the glass breaks?
The whole insulated glass unit is replaced, because the blind is sealed inside it. Makers warrant the blind mechanism for a stated period, so a failure in that window is a warranty claim and a wait for a new glass unit, not a quick fix. That is the main reason we suggest them only in the rooms where a hanging blind would be wrecked anyway.
Which rooms are between-the-glass blinds best for?
Kitchens, especially over the sink where a hanging blind collects grease and gets splashed. Bathrooms that need privacy and get steamed. Kids' rooms and family rooms where blinds get bent and cords get pulled. Patio doors and sidelites where vertical blinds always fail. And rentals, where blinds are the first thing a tenant breaks.
Can I get between-the-glass blinds on a casement window?
Yes, casements and fixed units take them well because the glass unit is one piece. Double hungs need a blind in each sash with two operators, and some lines limit which double hung sizes are offered with blinds. Sliders are offered in some lines. We confirm the availability for each opening when we write the quote.
Do built-in blinds come in colors to match my room?
A short list: white, off-white, and a few neutral tans and greys, depending on the maker. Pleated shades come in a few more fabric colors. They are not a decorator product; they are a utility blind that never needs cleaning. If the room needs a specific color or texture, order standard glass and hang the blind you want.
Can I put between-the-glass blinds in some windows and regular blinds in the others?
Yes, and most houses do. The window frames all come from one line in one color, so from outside nothing looks different. Inside, the kitchen and bathroom windows have the sealed blind and the living room and bedrooms have whatever blinds or drapes you like. The quote marks which units carry the blind.
