Obscure Glass Bathroom Window Replacement — Privacy Glass Choices
The bathroom window faces the neighbors or the street, and you are tired of keeping a blind closed on the one window that should let light in.

Obscure glass bathroom window replacement puts textured privacy glass where clear glass was: rain, glue chip, frosted or reed patterns, picked by how much they blur. JMB Builders orders the new window with obscure glass, removes the old unit, sets and seals the new one, and trims it inside with moisture-resistant trim across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per window, quoted from photos, with a reply within one business day.
- Priced per window
- Rain, glue chip, frosted or reed glass
- Tempered where the code calls for it

Obscure glass is textured or etched so light comes through and shapes do not. It is ordered as part of the window, so the privacy is in the glass itself. It goes in bathrooms most often, and also in street-facing windows by a front door, a stair landing or a lower-level bedroom that looks onto a neighbor.
The patterns blur by different amounts. Rain and glue chip blur heavily. Frosted, acid-etched glass is smooth and even, and blurs heavily up close. Reed has vertical ribs and blurs side to side more than up and down. The obscure pane is usually one side of a normal insulated glass unit, so the window keeps its Low-E coating and gas fill on most lines.
On a double-hung, the obscure glass can go in the bottom sash only, with clear glass on top for sky and light. A window inside a tub or shower wall, or close to a tub, needs tempered safety glass; that wet-wall install is its own page. Interior trim around a bathroom window is best in PVC or another material that does not swell.

How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Window style and size
- Glass pattern, and obscure in one sash or both
- Tempered glass near a tub or shower
- Insert vs. full-frame replacement
- Interior trim: reset wood or new PVC
- Rot in the sill from bathroom moisture
Tell us what the window looks onto and how much privacy you want; it decides the pattern.
How long it takes
One bathroom window: about half a day once it arrives. Windows with special glass can take longer to arrive than clear-glass units.

Situations and options
Rain or glue chip
Heavy texture, strong privacy, and it hides water spots. A common pick for bathrooms that face a neighbor.
Frosted (acid-etched)
Smooth, even and modern-looking. Strong privacy up close, a soft glow from outside at night.
Reed
Vertical ribs. Blurs side to side more than straight on, so it suits windows where the view in is from an angle.
Bottom sash only
On a double-hung, obscure glass below and clear glass above. Privacy where you stand, sky and light at the top.
Obscure Glass Bathroom Window Replacement — Privacy Glass Choices: questions, answered
What is the most private glass for a bathroom window?
Heavy textures such as rain or glue chip, or acid-etched frosted glass, blur the most. Reed blurs less straight on. Remember that any obscure glass shows a shadow when the light is on inside at night, so the darkest-blur pattern is the safe pick for a window facing the street.
Can I get obscure glass in only the bottom half of the window?
On a double-hung or single-hung, yes. The lower sash gets obscure glass and the upper sash stays clear. You keep privacy at eye level and still see sky and light.
Does obscure glass still have Low-E and argon?
On most window lines, yes. The obscure pane is one side of a normal insulated glass unit, so the Low-E coating and gas fill stay. We confirm it on the order for the line you choose.
Can you change the glass in my existing window to frosted?
Sometimes. If the frame and sash are sound, a new sealed glass unit with obscure glass can be ordered for the sash. If the window is old, drafty or rotting at the sill, a new window with obscure glass is the better fix.
Does a bathroom window need tempered glass?
A window inside a tub or shower wall, or close to a tub or shower, needs tempered safety glass to code. A bathroom window across the room usually does not. We check where the window sits before ordering.
Is frosted window film as good as obscure glass?
Film is cheaper and reversible, but it can peel and bubble at the edges, especially with bathroom moisture. Obscure glass ordered in the window does not wear off. If the window is being replaced anyway, the glass is the cleaner choice.
