An awning is a casement turned on its side: hinged at the top, cranked out at the bottom. The sash sheds rain, so it can stay open in a shower. That is why you find awnings over kitchen sinks, in bathrooms, in basements, and stacked below or above picture windows.
They fail the same way casements do. The operator strips, the hinges wear, the sash stops pulling tight along the bottom, and cold air or water gets in at the sill. Over a sink, the stool below has often been soaked for years. We check it when the old unit comes out.

What is an awning window?
An awning window is hinged at the top and opens outward from the bottom with a crank. Because the sash slopes away from the house when open, it sheds rain. It is common over kitchen sinks, in bathrooms and stacked with picture windows.
Can an awning window stay open when it rains?
In light rain, yes. The open sash acts like a small roof over the gap. In wind-driven rain some water can still get in, so close it for storms.
Can I replace the awning under my picture window without replacing the picture window?
If they are separate units, yes. If they were built as one mulled unit, they usually come out together. We can tell from inside photos of the frame where they meet.
Is an awning window good over a kitchen sink?
It is one of the best choices there. You reach across the counter and turn a crank instead of lifting a sash. It can also stay cracked open in light rain while you cook.
My awning window will not close tight — repair or replace?
If the only problem is the operator, a new crank fixes it. If the sash is warped, the hinges are bent or the frame is racked, the window is worn out and replacement is the fix.
Can an awning window be used for egress?
Rarely. The open sash blocks much of the opening, so most awnings do not give the clear opening needed for escape. Bedrooms usually need a casement or slider sized for egress; we check that at the measure.
