Questions to ask a window installer: Are you licensed in Minnesota? Who measures and who installs? Is every opening measured before ordering? Who pulls the permit? What is the lead time? Who cleans up? Can I see your insurance certificate? JMB Builders answers each one in writing on a quote priced per opening, for homeowners across the Twin Cities metro. Send photos or book a free in-home estimate.
- Licensed MN contractor BC809005
- Certificate of insurance and W-9 on request
- Every opening measured before ordering

Most window quotes look alike on the first page: a brand, a number of windows, a total. The differences are in who does the work, what is measured, and what is left out. Asking the same questions of every installer puts the quotes on equal footing.
Below are the questions we would ask if we were buying, with our own answer to each. Ask them of anyone you are considering. A good installer answers without hedging and puts the answers in writing.
One rule for every quote: the openings should be listed one by one. If a quote gives one number for the house, ask for the list before you compare it to anything.

What JMB supplies
- License number BC809005, checkable on the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry site
- A certificate of insurance and a W-9 when you ask
- One in-person measure of every opening before anything is ordered
- A written quote listing each opening, install method and trim
- The permit, pulled when the job needs one
- The brand's lead time written on the quote
- Daily cleanup, haul-away of old windows, and one number to call during the job
How it is priced: per opening
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of openings and the mix of styles and sizes
- Brand, frame material and glass package
- Insert vs. full frame, decided opening by opening
- Interior and exterior trim scope
- Rot or framing repair found at the measure
- Second-story and hard-to-reach openings
No sign-today discount. The price on the quote is the price; take the time you need to compare.
How long it takes
The quote comes after the measure. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Install days are set once the windows arrive.

Situations and options
Are you licensed in Minnesota?
Our answer: yes, JMB Builders LLC is a licensed Minnesota residential building contractor, BC809005. Look it up on the Department of Labor and Industry license search before you sign with anyone.
Who measures, and who installs?
Our answer: the crew that installs your windows is the crew that measured them. You meet the people who will be in your house before the order goes in.
Is every opening measured before ordering?
Our answer: yes. Every opening is measured in person and checked for square and rot. Nothing is ordered from a photo or a guess.
Who pulls the permit?
Our answer: we do, when the job needs one. Rules differ by city, especially when an opening changes size or a bedroom window has to meet egress.
What is the lead time?
Our answer: it depends on the brand, the line and the options. It is written on your quote, and we call you if the manufacturer's date moves.
What happens to the mess and the old windows?
Our answer: floors are covered at each window, each room is vacuumed when we finish it, and old windows leave in our trailer.
Can I see your insurance certificate?
Our answer: yes. Ask and we send a certificate of insurance and a W-9.
Where do the windows come from?
Our answer: we buy them through ABC Supply. We are an installer, not a dealer, so we can quote more than one line on the same list of openings.
Questions to Ask a Window Installer — and How We Answer Them: questions, answered
What should I ask a window installer before hiring?
Ask for the Minnesota license number, who measures and who installs, whether every opening is measured before ordering, who pulls the permit, what the lead time is, how cleanup and haul-away work, and for a certificate of insurance. Ask for all of it in writing, on a quote that lists each opening.
How do I check a window contractor's license in Minnesota?
Use the license lookup on the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry website. Search by license number or business name. JMB Builders LLC is licensed residential building contractor BC809005.
Should a window quote list every window?
Yes. Each opening should show the room, style, size, install method (insert or full frame), glass and trim. A single number for the house cannot be compared to another quote or split into phases. Our quotes list every opening.
Do I need a permit to replace windows in Minnesota?
It depends on the city and the job. A same-size swap is often handled differently from a new or enlarged opening or a bedroom window that has to meet egress. We check with the city and pull the permit when the job needs one.
Is it a red flag if a window company offers a discount to sign today?
It is a reason to slow down. A fair price on Tuesday is still fair on Friday. We do not offer sign-today discounts; the quote stays as written while you compare.
Who should I call if something comes up during the install?
Ask every installer that question before you sign. With JMB Builders, the number on your quote reaches the crew doing your job, for schedule changes, a room you need back, or something found in an opening.
