Low Maintenance Replacement Windows — Nothing to Paint, Inside or Out

You are done scraping and painting window sills every few summers. The goal is a window, and the trim around it, that never needs a brush.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

Low maintenance replacement windows have frames that never get painted, like vinyl, composite, fiberglass or clad, and exterior trim wrapped in aluminum or PVC so nothing around them needs paint either. JMB Builders measures, orders through ABC Supply and installs them across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per opening; send photos and we reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per opening, windows supplied
  • No-paint frame and capped exterior trim
  • What still needs care, written down

Most window painting is not the window. It is the wood sill, brickmould and casing around it. So low maintenance takes two decisions: a frame material that is never painted, and exterior trim that is wrapped or replaced so it is never painted either. Skip the second one and you are still on a ladder with a brush.

On the frame, vinyl, Fibrex composite and fiberglass carry their color in the material or a factory finish. Andersen says the Perma-Shield vinyl exterior on its 200 and 400 Series never needs painting and resists peeling, blistering and flaking, and that the A-Series exterior will not peel, blister, fade or corrode. Pella describes its 250 Series vinyl as no painting, no staining. Inside, a wood interior still needs its finish kept up; a vinyl, fiberglass or laminate interior does not.

Outside, the old wood frame is wrapped in aluminum coil, or rotten trim is replaced with PVC. What stays on your list is short: wash the glass, vacuum the tracks, keep the weep holes open, and look at the sealant joints now and then. We buy through ABC Supply. Andersen is confirmed at our Minnesota ABC branches; for any other brand we confirm the line with our ABC branch before the quote is final.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Whether you want any wood inside, or nothing to finish at all
  • Exterior color, and whether the trim gets capped or replaced
  • Glass package and grille choice
  • Photos of each window outside, with a close-up of the worst sill

What JMB supplies

  • One in-person measure of every opening and a check of the sills and trim for rot
  • No-paint windows on one order, so color and glass match
  • Line-item quote by opening, with capping or PVC trim on its own line
  • Aluminum coil capping bent on site, or PVC trim where wood is rotten
  • Sill pan, flashing, foam and exterior sealant in the frame color
  • Removal and haul-away of the old windows
  • A short care list for your windows, and photos in your job folder

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Frame material: vinyl, composite, fiberglass or clad wood
  • Interior: vinyl or laminate, or wood that needs a finish
  • Exterior color; dark colors are often an option
  • Aluminum capping vs. new PVC trim on each opening
  • Rot repair in the sill or framing before capping
  • Insert or full-frame install, and second-story access

Send a close-up of the worst sill and brickmould. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

How long it takes

Three to five windows a day with exterior capping, once the order arrives. Openings that need rotten trim replaced take longer.

Situations and options

Vinyl

Color through the material or a factory finish, nothing to paint inside or out. The common pick for standard-size openings in white or tan.

Composite or fiberglass

Andersen 100 Series Fibrex or Pella Impervia fiberglass with a factory powder-coat. No paint, and these are the lines to look at for dark exterior colors.

Clad wood or wood on vinyl

No paint outside, real wood inside. The outside is low maintenance; the inside wood needs its stain or paint kept up, mostly at the bottom rail.

Capped or PVC exterior trim

The old wood frame and sill wrapped in aluminum coil, or rotten brickmould replaced with PVC. This is what takes the paint brush off the job.

Low Maintenance Replacement Windows — Nothing to Paint, Inside or Out: questions, answered

Are any replacement windows truly maintenance free?

No window is zero care. The glass gets washed, the tracks vacuumed, the weep holes kept clear and the exterior sealant joints looked at now and then. What you can get rid of is painting, by picking a no-paint frame and capping or replacing the wood trim.

Which replacement windows never need painting?

Vinyl, composite, fiberglass and clad windows are not painted outside. Andersen says its Perma-Shield vinyl exterior never needs painting, and Pella describes its 250 Series vinyl as no painting and no staining. If you want nothing to finish inside either, pick a vinyl, fiberglass or laminate interior instead of wood.

Is fiberglass lower maintenance than vinyl?

For upkeep they are about the same: neither gets painted. The real differences are size, dark colors and stiffness, which matter on big openings. Our vinyl vs fiberglass page walks through that by opening.

What about the trim around new windows?

Outside, the old wood frame and sill are wrapped in aluminum coil bent to fit, or rotten trim is replaced with PVC, so nothing is left to paint. Inside, casing is painted or stained once; painting is quoted as a separate line, or you paint it yourself.

Does a wood interior window count as low maintenance?

Outside, yes, because the cladding is not painted. Inside, the wood needs its finish kept up, especially at the bottom rail where winter condensation sits. If you want zero finishing, pick a vinyl, fiberglass or woodgrain laminate interior.

Do dark no-paint windows fade?

That depends on the line and what the maker warrants. Andersen states its 100 Series dark exterior colors are warranted against fading, flaking and peeling, and that its A-Series exterior will not fade. For other lines we read you the maker's finish terms before you order.
