ENERGY STAR Most Efficient Replacement Windows — Ordering to the Label
The rebate form says Most Efficient and the window brochures all say ENERGY STAR.

ENERGY STAR Most Efficient replacement windows clear a tighter bar than the standard Version 7.0 Northern-zone rating, which in practice means triple pane or the best double pane with warm-edge spacers. On a Minnesota house we order to the label when a rebate or credit asks for it, or on the cold walls where that glass earns its cost. JMB Builders supplies and installs them across the Twin Cities; send photos and we reply within one business day.
- Most Efficient: a tighter bar than the Northern-zone rating
- Usually triple pane or top double pane, warm-edge spacers
- Ask your utility about rebates tied to the label

Every window sold in Minnesota that claims ENERGY STAR has to meet the Version 7.0 Northern-zone rating, which is a limit on how much heat the whole window loses, and a range for how much sun it lets in. That is the baseline. Most decent double-pane windows with a low-E coating reach it. ENERGY STAR Most Efficient is a separate, stricter designation the program gives each year to the models with the best performance of all. Far fewer windows carry it.
In practice a Most Efficient window in the Northern zone is a triple-pane unit, or a double-pane unit with the best heat-retaining low-E coatings, argon or krypton fill and a warm-edge spacer, in a frame that insulates well. Fiberglass, composite, clad wood and better vinyl frames all have models on the list. It is the glass package and the frame together, so the same brand can have one line on the list and another not.
You do not need Most Efficient on every window to have a warm house. You need it when a federal tax credit or a utility rebate requires it, and the paperwork wants the label; ask your utility what its current program asks for, since the rules change. Beyond that, we recommend it on the north and west walls where the glass surface temperature matters most, and a standard Northern-zone unit elsewhere. JMB Builders orders to the label on the openings you choose, keeps the labels and the certification sheet for your file, and installs with a sill pan, low-expansion foam and sealed exterior joints, because a Most Efficient window in a leaky opening does not perform to its label.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.
What you supply
- Any rebate or credit paperwork you plan to file, so the order matches what it asks for
- Which rooms are cold, so the upgrade goes where it pays
- Frame material and color preferences, knowing dark colors and triple pane narrow the list
- Interior finish and screen choices, same as any replacement
What JMB supplies
- A quote that names the glass package per window and marks which units carry the Most Efficient designation
- In-home measure of each opening before anything is ordered
- The windows, ordered to the label on the openings you pick, from one line so the house matches
- The rating labels and the maker's certification sheet saved for your rebate or tax file
- Removal and haul-away of the old windows
- Sill pan, shims, low-expansion foam and exterior sealant at every opening
- Photos of the finished windows in your job folder
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Triple pane or top-tier double pane glass vs. a standard Northern-zone package
- Frame material; some materials reach the label more easily than others
- How many openings are ordered to the label: the cold walls or the whole house
- Insert vs. full-frame install at each opening
- Dark exterior colors, which narrow the list of qualifying models
- Window count and second-story access
Send photos of each window and tell us whether you are filing for a credit or rebate. If so, we match the order to the label the form asks for and keep the paperwork for you.
How long it takes
Triple-pane units are heavier and set with two people, but the pace is the same: three to five windows a day as inserts. Factory lead time on the glass package comes first.

Situations and options
Most Efficient on the whole house
Every opening ordered to the label. The choice when a rebate or credit covers the whole project, or when the house is cold on every side. One line, one glass package, labels on every unit.
Most Efficient on north and west, standard elsewhere
The upgrade goes where the glass works hardest and the rest of the house gets a good standard package in the same frame. Lower total, same look from the street, and the labeled units are the ones that would frost.
Northern-zone rated everywhere
Every window meets the Version 7.0 Northern-zone rating but none is ordered to the stricter label. A warm house at a lower cost, and the right answer when no program asks for Most Efficient.
Ordered to a rebate form
You bring the utility or tax form; we read what it asks for and order units whose labels match it, then keep the labels and certification sheet. Ask your utility what it currently requires before the order goes in.
ENERGY STAR Most Efficient Replacement Windows — Ordering to the Label: questions, answered
What is the difference between ENERGY STAR and ENERGY STAR Most Efficient windows?
ENERGY STAR is the baseline: a window that meets the Version 7.0 Northern-zone rating for Minnesota. Most Efficient is a stricter designation the program gives each year to the top-performing models only. Most good double-pane windows are ENERGY STAR; far fewer are Most Efficient, and those are usually triple pane or the best double pane with warm-edge spacers. The label on each window says which one it is.
Do I need Most Efficient windows in Minnesota?
Not on every window. A Northern-zone rated window is built for this climate. Most Efficient is worth ordering when a tax credit or utility rebate requires it, and on the north and west walls where the glass gets coldest and a better unit stops frost and makes the room feel warmer. Order it there and a standard Northern-zone unit on the rest, in the same frame and color.
Are triple pane windows the same as Most Efficient?
Usually a Most Efficient window in the Northern zone is triple pane, but not every triple pane window has the designation, and a few double-pane units with the best coatings and spacers do. The designation is given to specific models based on the whole window's performance, frame included. Ask for the model's listing or the label, not just the pane count.
Will ENERGY STAR Most Efficient windows qualify for a rebate or tax credit?
Many programs tie their window incentive to the Most Efficient designation, but the rules and amounts change from year to year. Ask your utility what its current window rebate requires, and check the current federal credit terms before you order. We order to whatever the form asks for and save the labels and certification sheet so the paperwork is in your file.
Can I get Most Efficient windows in black or in vinyl?
Some. Fiberglass, composite and clad lines have the most qualifying models; some vinyl lines qualify with a triple-pane package. Dark exterior colors narrow the list because they are offered on fewer lines. Tell us the color and material you want and we find the models on the current list that offer it, or we tell you the trade-off.
Does the installation affect whether the window performs to its label?
Yes, a lot. The label rates the window unit; the gap between the frame and the wall is not rated and it is where air leaks. A sill pan, low-expansion foam filling the gap, a sealed exterior joint and a frame set without bowing are what make the installed window perform like the one on the label. We do those steps on every window, labeled or not.
