Triple Pane Window Replacement — Heavier Units Set Right
You have decided on triple pane for the cold side of the house, or the whole house, and want it installed by someone who plans for the weight and the depth.

Triple pane window replacement is a different install from double pane: the units are heavier, the frames are often deeper, and double-hung balances have to match the sash weight. JMB Builders measures for frame depth, sets each unit with two people where needed, shims under the setting points, adjusts the sashes and builds jamb extensions to the new depth. Twin Cities metro. Priced per window.
- Priced per window
- Frame depth checked before ordering
- Two-person sets on large units

Whether triple pane is worth it is covered in our blog. This page is for after the decision: getting triple pane windows installed so they work. A third pane of glass adds weight and thickness. That changes the order, the handling and the trim.
Weight first. A big triple pane sash is noticeably heavier than the double pane it replaces. On a double-hung, the balances are sized at the factory for the sash weight, so the right balance comes with the right order and the sash has to be adjusted on site to stay where you put it. Large units are carried and set by two people and supported on shims under the frame where the maker calls for them, so the frame does not sag over time.
Depth second. Triple pane frames are often deeper than the old window. An insert has to fit the old frame's depth, and a full-frame unit sits differently in the wall, so the inside needs jamb extensions sized to the new depth. We check the frame depth and wall thickness before the order is placed. Casements and awnings carry triple glass well because the hinges take the weight; large sliders take the most care.

How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

- Insert into the old frame vs. full-frame replacement
- Style: casement and fixed vs. double-hung or large slider
- Depth of jamb extensions needed inside
- Second-floor access and staging
- Rot repair at sills or framing, quoted first
Send a photo of each window and a tape measure across the depth of one jamb, inside edge to outside edge.
How long it takes

Situations and options
Whole house in triple pane
One measure, one order and one depth plan for every window, so the interior trim reads the same in every room.
Cold sides only
Triple pane on the north and west walls and bedrooms, double pane elsewhere. Same brand and style so they look alike from the street.
Casements and fixed units
The easiest windows to carry triple glass: hinges and fixed frames take the weight with no balances to tune.
Double-hungs and sliders
Workable in triple pane with the right balances and rollers from the factory. We adjust each sash on site so it moves smoothly and stays put.
Triple Pane Window Replacement — Heavier Units Set Right: questions, answered
Is installing triple pane windows different from double pane?
Yes. The units are heavier and often deeper, so large ones are set by two people, supported on shims where the maker calls for them, and trimmed with deeper jamb extensions. Double-hung sashes need the right balances from the factory and an adjustment on site so they stay where you put them.
Can triple pane windows go in as inserts in my old frames?
Sometimes. The insert has to fit the old frame's depth, and triple pane frames are often deeper. We measure the depth of each old frame before ordering. If it is too shallow, a full-frame replacement is the better fit.
Do heavy triple pane double-hung sashes fall down?
They should not when the balances match the sash weight. The window maker sizes the balances for the glass ordered, so the order has to say triple pane. On install we adjust each sash so it stays open at any height and tilts and locks properly.
Which windows are worth doing in triple pane in Minnesota?
The north and west walls and bedrooms gain the most, since that is where cold glass and winter wind are worst. Many homeowners do those in triple pane and the rest in double pane of the same line. The blog post on double vs triple pane goes through the tradeoffs.
Do triple pane windows need deeper interior trim?
Often. A deeper frame changes where the window sits in the wall, so the jamb extensions are built to the new depth before the casing goes on. We measure the wall and the new frame so the extensions are cut to fit, not shimmed out.
Can you install triple pane windows I already ordered?
Yes. Send the order sheet and photos of each opening. We check the sizes and frame depths against the openings before install day and plan the trim to match.
