Black Window Replacement — Black Exterior or Interior Frames Installed
You want black windows, and you have heard that dark frames warp, fade or look wrong next to white trim.

Black window replacement is a normal replacement with a few more decisions: a frame material the maker sells in black, black outside only or both sides, caulk and trim that match, and gaps set for a dark frame that moves more in the sun. JMB Builders measures, orders through ABC Supply and installs across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per window, quoted from photos or at a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per window, windows supplied
- Black outside only, or black both sides
- Black sealant and capping to match the frame

A black frame sits in the sun and gets hotter than a white one, and hotter frames grow and shrink more. Window makers deal with that on their side: dark colors are sold only on certain lines, in fiberglass, composite, clad wood or vinyl with a laminate or cap layer built for heat. A white vinyl window painted black afterward is not the same thing. So the first step is picking a line the maker actually sells in black.
The second step is the install. A dark frame gets the gap and shim spacing the maker calls for, low-expansion foam instead of a tight pack, and fasteners where the instructions put them, so the frame can move without bowing. Outside, the joint gets black sealant and the old frame is wrapped in black aluminum coil or trimmed in PVC painted to match. White caulk around a black window is what makes a good job look unfinished.
Inside you choose: a black interior frame, or a white or wood interior with only the outside black. Andersen's 100 Series and 400 Series and Pella's Impervia fiberglass list Black; Pella's vinyl lines pair a black exterior with a white interior. JMB Builders installs them; we are an installer, not a dealer for any brand.

How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Frame material and line: vinyl with a dark exterior, composite, fiberglass or clad wood
- Black exterior only vs. black interior as well
- Insert vs. full frame install for each opening
- Black coil capping or painted PVC trim outside
- Interior casing kept, painted or replaced
- Window count, size and second-story access
Send a photo of each window inside and out and say whether you want the inside black too. Dark colors can add lead time; it is written on the quote.
How long it takes
Three to five windows a day with exterior capping, once the black windows arrive. A whole house usually takes a few days.

Situations and options
Black exterior, white interior
The most common choice. The house reads black from the street and the rooms keep white frames that match the existing trim. Offered on most lines that sell black, including dual-color vinyl.
Black inside and out
Black frames on both faces. Usually limited to composite, fiberglass or clad lines, and some makers only sell a black interior with a black exterior. The interior casing is often painted to match or a contrasting white.
Black with black capping outside
On an insert job, the old wood frame and sill are wrapped in black aluminum coil so no white or bare wood shows around the new window.
Black grilles and hardware
Grilles between the glass or simulated divided lites in black, and black locks and cranks, so nothing on the window reads a different color.
Black Window Replacement — Black Exterior or Interior Frames Installed: questions, answered
Do black vinyl windows warp in the sun?
Dark vinyl takes on more heat than white, so it moves more. Makers handle that by selling black only on certain lines, with laminates, cap layers or heat-reflecting pigments. On the install side, the frame gets the gaps the maker specifies and low-expansion foam, so it can move without bowing. Painting a white vinyl window black skips all of that.
Can I get windows that are black outside and white inside?
Yes, it is the most common way black windows are ordered. The exterior is black and the interior is white or wood, so the new frames match your existing white casing and walls. Vinyl, composite, fiberglass and clad wood lines all offer some version of it.
What color caulk goes around black windows?
Outside, a black or dark sealant made for exterior window joints, so the line around the frame disappears. Inside, it depends on the casing: paintable caulk if the trim will be painted, or a black or white sealant to match what it touches. White caulk around a black exterior frame is the most common mistake on these jobs.
Do black windows take longer to get?
Often they do. Dark colors are made to order on many lines and some makers add lead time for them. The lead time for the line you pick is written on the quote, and install days are set when the windows arrive.
Can I replace some windows in black and leave the rest white?
You can, but black and white windows on the same side of the house look like the job stopped halfway. Doing one full side at a time works if the budget needs splitting. The order is written down so the later windows come in the same line, color and grille pattern.
What trim goes outside black replacement windows?
On an insert job the old wood frame is wrapped in black aluminum coil, so there is nothing to paint. On a full frame job new PVC or composite trim goes on and is painted to match, or a black coil wrap goes over it. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or you can paint it yourself.
