Match Window and Door Colors on a House — Frames, Doors, Hardware
Black windows with a black front door, or white with bronze hardware. The trick is choosing all of it at once, not one opening at a time.

To match window and door colors on a house, pick every finish together, from samples, before anything is ordered: window frame color inside and out, entry and patio door finish, capping coil, handle and lock finish, and grille pattern. JMB Builders brings the samples to the in-home measure and writes each choice on the line-item quote. Twin Cities metro, priced per project.
- Every finish picked from samples first
- Colors written on the quote, opening by opening
- Door can be painted on site to match

Color names do not travel between companies. One maker's black is a different black from another's, and a fiberglass door finish is a different material from a vinyl or clad window frame. Put them side by side outdoors and the difference shows. So we match by sample, in daylight, at your house.
It is not just frame color. The handles on the casements, the patio door handle, the front door handleset and deadbolt should be one finish. The grille pattern on the windows should agree with the glass in the doors. And the capping coil or trim color has to work with all of it. Each of those choices goes on the quote by opening, so nothing is left to whoever places the order.

What you supply
- Your color direction: black, bronze, white, almond, or two-tone
- Hardware finish you want throughout
- Grille pattern, or no grilles
- Photos of the siding, roof and stone so the samples are judged against them
What JMB supplies
- Frame, door, coil and hardware samples at the in-home measure
- A finish schedule on the quote: each window and door with its colors and hardware
- Windows and doors ordered together
- Capping coil or trim in the color that goes with the frames
- Caulk in a color that suits the frame and trim
- On-site painting of a door to match, as a separate line, when no factory finish matches
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Dark or two-color frames vs. standard white or almond
- Door finish: factory color, stain, or painted on site
- Hardware finish upgrades on windows and doors
- Grilles: pattern, between the glass or on the glass
- Number of windows and doors in the package
- Capping coil or exterior trim color and material
Send a photo of the whole front of the house in daylight. Siding and roof color change which window and door colors look right.
How long it takes
Picking finishes happens at the measure. Dark colors and special hardware can lengthen lead time; it depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Install pace is the same as any whole-house job.

Situations and options
All black
Black window frames, a black front door and black hardware. Dark frames take more heat from the sun, so we follow the maker's install gaps for dark colors. The door can be factory finished or painted on site.
White inside, dark outside
Many lines offer a dark exterior with a white interior. The doors are matched to the outside color; interior trim stays white.
Hardware tied together
Casement handles, patio door handle, handleset and deadbolt in one finish such as black, bronze or satin nickel, chosen from what each maker offers.
Match Window and Door Colors on a House — Frames, Doors, Hardware: questions, answered
Should windows and doors be the same color?
On the outside, they should at least look like they belong together. Many houses use one frame color on all windows and doors. Others use a contrasting front door on purpose. Either works when it is chosen together from samples, not one opening at a time.
Will a black front door match black windows?
Not always by name, because the door and windows are often made by different companies from different materials. We hold the samples side by side outdoors before ordering. If no factory finish is close, the door can be painted on site as a separate line.
Should door hardware match window hardware?
It looks finished when it does: casement handles, the patio door handle and the front handleset in one finish. Each maker offers its own finishes, so we compare them in hand and write the finish for each opening on the quote.
Do grilles on windows have to match the front door glass?
They should agree. A prairie grille on the windows and a full colonial grid in the door looks off. Pick the window grille pattern first, then choose door glass that goes with it.
What color trim goes with dark windows?
Many people use capping coil in the same dark color, or a white or light trim for contrast. Look at it against your siding. We bring coil samples to the measure.
Can I add new windows later in the same color?
Yes, if the brand, series and color are written down. That is why the finish schedule goes on the quote: a window added years later can be ordered to the same spec.
