Therma-Tru Smooth-Star Entry Door Replacement — Painted Fiberglass

You want a painted front, side or back door that will not dent like steel or swell like wood.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

Therma-Tru Smooth-Star entry door replacement puts in a smooth fiberglass door made for paint, in raised-panel or Shaker styles. It can arrive factory painted, or we paint it as a separate line. JMB Builders measures in person, orders the door, removes the old door and frame, and installs the new unit across the Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud. Priced per door. Send photos for a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door, Smooth-Star door included
  • Factory painted or painted as its own line
  • Raised-panel and Shaker styles
Two-story home with shake gables, new grid windows and a glass-panel entry door under a covered porch

Smooth-Star is Therma-Tru's smooth-skin fiberglass door, and Therma-Tru positions it as the value line. It comes in raised-panel styles and a Shaker family with solid-panel, flush-glazed and simulated-divided-lite designs, in 6 foot 8 inch and 8 foot heights, with sidelites. For 2026 Therma-Tru added a three-quarter-lite flush-glazed Shaker door. The fiberglass will not dent or rust the way steel can.

The finish is the decision that matters most. Therma-Tru offers factory PrismaGuard paint in its standard colors, such as Estuary, Alpine, Obsidian, Peregrine, Arctic Ice, Canyon, Elk and Golden Wheat. Or order it ready to paint in any color you want: painting is quoted as a separate line on the quote, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself, on all six sides the way Therma-Tru's instructions call for.

Under the skin is a polyurethane foam core, sold as a complete system with frame, sill and weatherstrip. Therma-Tru is on ABC Supply's entry door list; we confirm the Smooth-Star line with our ABC branch before the quote is final. We measure the opening in person, the old door stays in until the new one is here, and the door is locked the day it is set.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Style: raised panel or Shaker, solid or with glass, standard or 8 foot height
  • Factory PrismaGuard color, or a paint color of your own
  • Glass pattern if the door or sidelites have glass
  • Lockset, deadbolt and finish
  • Photos of the door from both sides and a close-up of the sill

What JMB supplies

  • In-person measure of the opening, jamb width and swing before the order
  • The Smooth-Star door ordered to that opening
  • A quote with the door, the install, any rot repair and any painting on separate lines
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door, frame and threshold
  • Sill pan, flashing tape, shims, low-expansion foam, backer rod and sealant
  • Sill, strike and weatherstrip adjusted so the door seals and latches
  • Exterior trim and interior casing, primed and caulked
  • Painting the door and trim on site when you want it, quoted as its own line

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Factory PrismaGuard paint vs. ready to paint
  • Style and height: raised panel or Shaker, standard or 8 foot
  • Glass in the door and sidelites, from solid to three-quarter lite
  • Sidelites with the door
  • Rot at the sill, jamb bottoms or subfloor
  • Painting on site, quoted as a separate line

Send photos of the door inside and out and of the sill, and say if you want factory paint or a color of your own. Lead time is written on the quote.

How long it takes

One Smooth-Star door in a sound opening: about a day on site. Painting on site adds a return visit for coats to dry. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

Situations and options

Factory painted

Order the door in a PrismaGuard color and it arrives finished. Nothing to paint on site but the trim, and no wait for coats to dry.

Ready to paint, any color

Order it unfinished to paint the exact color you want. We paint it as its own line on the quote, or you paint it yourself with the product Therma-Tru lists.

Shaker with flush glass

Smooth-Star's Shaker family includes flush-glazed and divided-lite designs, and a three-quarter-lite door new for 2026. A clean look on newer and farmhouse-style houses.

Therma-Tru Smooth-Star Entry Door Replacement — Painted Fiberglass: questions, answered

Can a Therma-Tru Smooth-Star door be painted any color?

Yes. Order it ready to paint and it takes a paint color of your choice, applied with a product Therma-Tru lists for fiberglass. Or order a factory PrismaGuard color from Therma-Tru's standard set and it arrives finished. Painting on site is quoted as a separate line.

Is Smooth-Star better than a steel door?

The fiberglass skin does not dent or rust the way steel can, and the foam core insulates the slab. A steel door can cost less and is a fair pick for a protected side door. For a front door that takes sun, rain and kids, fiberglass usually holds its finish and shape longer.

What styles does Smooth-Star come in?

Therma-Tru lists raised-panel styles and a Shaker family with solid-panel, flush-glazed and simulated-divided-lite designs. They come in 6 foot 8 inch and 8 foot heights, as single or double doors, with sidelites. For 2026 there is a three-quarter-lite flush-glazed Shaker door.

Should I get factory paint or paint the Smooth-Star door myself?

Factory paint arrives done and saves time on site, but you are limited to Therma-Tru's color set. Painting it yourself or having it painted lets you match any color. If you paint it, all six sides of the slab get finished, including the top and bottom edges.

Where can I get a Therma-Tru Smooth-Star door?

Therma-Tru sells through lumberyards and millwork distributors. We order through ABC Supply, which lists Therma-Tru among its entry door makers, and we confirm the Smooth-Star line with our ABC branch before the quote is final. We are an installer, not a Therma-Tru dealer.

Can Smooth-Star go on the back and side doors too?

Yes. It is a common pick for back, side and garage-to-house doors because it is smooth, paintable and does not dent. Each door is quoted on its own line, so you can do one now and others later with the same color written on the quote.
