Fiberglass entry doors are molded skins over a foam core, set in a frame. They do not dent the way steel does, do not rust, and do not swell and check the way a wood door does in sun and rain. That makes them a common pick for a front door that faces south or west, or a door that gets rain on it with no porch roof.
The skin comes smooth, for paint, or with a molded woodgrain that takes stain. A factory-finished door arrives painted or stained and needs nothing on site but touch-up; an unfinished one has to be finished with a product the maker lists, on all six sides, soon after it goes in. Many fiberglass units can also be ordered with a composite frame and brickmould that will not rot at the bottom.
Install is the same careful job as any entry door: old unit out, rot cut out and replaced, a sill pan down, flashing lapped at the sides and head, the frame shimmed plumb and square, foamed and sealed, then casing inside. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

How long does a fiberglass entry door last?
A fiberglass door does not rot, rust or dent in normal use, so the skin usually outlasts the finish on it. The parts that wear are the weatherstrip, the sweep and the hardware, and those can be replaced. The finish needs a fresh coat every so often, especially in full sun.
Can a fiberglass door be stained to look like wood?
Yes, if you order a woodgrain skin. It can come factory stained, or be stained on site with the finish the door maker lists. Smooth fiberglass doors are meant for paint.
Is a fiberglass door good for a front door in full sun?
It is one of the better choices, because fiberglass does not warp or check the way wood can and does not get as hot to the touch as dark steel. Dark finishes still fade over time in full sun. Adding a storm door over a dark fiberglass door can trap heat, so check the maker's guidance.
Do you finish an unfinished fiberglass door?
Yes. Staining or painting is quoted as its own line. The door is finished with the product the maker lists, including the top and bottom edges, so the warranty stays intact.
Can I replace a wood front door with a fiberglass one in the same opening?
Yes. We measure the opening and order a prehung fiberglass unit to fit it, with a jamb width that matches your wall. The old door and frame come out, the sill is checked for rot, and the new unit is set and trimmed.
