A front door gets sun, rain, freeze and thaw, and a hand on it every day. Paint on it fails at the edges and around the handle first, and it fails fast when the old finish was not sanded or the wrong primer was used. Steel doors need a bonding primer or the paint sheets off; fiberglass needs the factory finish scuffed; wood needs bare spots primed and end grain sealed at the bottom.
The job is small but the prep is most of it. We take the handle, deadbolt, kick plate and weatherstrip off rather than tape around them, clean the door, sand it, prime what needs it, and put on two coats of an exterior enamel that levels out. Painted on a dry day with the door open on its hinges, it is closed and locked that evening. The jamb, brickmould and storm door frame usually need doing at the same time, and they are a line on the same quote.

- Painting the jamb, brickmould, inside face and the storm door frame too
- A dark color over a light one, which takes a tinted primer

Send a photo of the door from the walk, one close-up of the finish near the handle, and one of the bottom edge. The bottom edge is where a steel door rusts and a wood door rots.
How long it takes
One door, brushed, on the hinges: a morning to prep and prime, coats through the afternoon, closed and locked by evening. Sprayed off the hinges: the door comes back the next day.

Situations and options
Steel entry door
Cleaned, sanded, rust spots at the bottom edge treated and primed, bonding primer over the whole door, then two coats of enamel. Dark colors are fine on steel in a Minnesota winter; the door does not warp.
Fiberglass door, smooth or woodgrain
The factory finish is scuffed so paint bonds, primed and painted. Woodgrain fiberglass can be painted or gel-stained; check the door maker's color guidance before going very dark on a south-facing door.
Wood door repaint
Loose paint scraped, bare wood primed with oil primer, cracks and checks filled, and the bottom edge sealed. A wood door that has never had its bottom edge painted is the one that swells and sticks; we do that edge every time.
Color change, both faces
Outside face in the new color, inside face in the trim color of the house, jamb and brickmould to match. The door reads as new from the street and from the hall.

Can you paint a steel front door?
Yes. A steel door takes paint well when it is cleaned, scuff-sanded and given a bonding primer first. Skip the primer and the paint peels in sheets within a year or two. Rust at the bottom edge or around the handle is sanded to bright metal and spot-primed before the rest of the door is done.
Should I paint or stain a fiberglass front door?
A smooth fiberglass door gets painted. A woodgrain fiberglass door can be gel-stained to look like wood or painted; if the old stain is faded and blotchy, paint is the cleaner reset. Either way the surface gets scuffed first so the finish bonds to the factory coating.
What paint do you use on a front door?
An exterior acrylic enamel made for doors and trim, in satin or semi-gloss. It levels out brush marks, stays flexible through the freeze-thaw, and cleans up. Over steel or fiberglass it goes on top of a bonding primer; over bare wood, an oil primer. We do not use interior paint on an entry door.
Do you take the door off to paint it?
Only for a sprayed finish. A brushed door is painted on its hinges with the hardware off, propped open, and closed that evening. A sprayed high-gloss door comes off, goes on sawhorses in the garage, and is re-hung the next day. The opening is covered with a temporary panel overnight.
Can I paint my front door a dark color in Minnesota?
On a steel or wood door, yes. On a fiberglass door in full sun, check the maker's color guidance first; some limit how dark the outside face can be so the skin does not deform. A dark door behind a full-glass storm door builds heat in summer, so keep the storm door vented on hot days.
How long before I can close the door after painting?
A few hours after the last coat on a dry, mild day. We paint in the morning so the door is closed and locked by evening. It should not be washed or have the weatherstrip pressing hard on a fresh edge for a few days, so we set the strip back a hair and tighten it on a follow-up if needed.
