An accent wall is a small job that is easy to do badly. Dark colors show every roller mark and every patch that was not primed. The corner where the dark wall meets the light one is the line everyone looks at, and tape alone does not give a clean one on textured drywall. And a deep color over a light wall needs a tinted primer or a third coat, or it looks streaky in afternoon light.
We treat it like any painting job: fill the nail holes and dents, sand, prime the patches and tint the primer when the color is deep, then cut the edges by brush and roll the field in two coats with the same nap and the same direction. Half a day for one wall, a day for a wall with a lot of trim or a vaulted ceiling line.

- The wall cleared and the furniture pulled a few feet out, or tell us and we handle it
- A word on the sheen: flat or matte hides more on a dark wall; eggshell wipes clean

- Wall size and ceiling height, and whether it is a vaulted or angled wall that needs a ladder line
- How dark the color is: deep colors take a tinted primer and sometimes a third coat
- How much is on the wall: windows, doors, a fireplace or built-ins mean more cutting in
- Wall condition: a few nail holes vs. a wall that needs skimming
- Textured drywall, which takes longer to cut a sharp line on than a smooth wall
- Two-tone or color-block designs with taped lines partway up the wall
- Doing more than one wall or room in the same visit

Situations and options
Dark bedroom wall behind the bed
Navy, charcoal, deep green or black on the headboard wall. Tinted primer under a dark color is the difference between two coats and four; we always use it.
Living room TV or fireplace wall
The wall with the most trim, the mantel and the mount to work around. We pull the TV and mount if you want the wall painted behind it and put them back.
Two-tone or color-block wall
A line at chair-rail height, a wide horizontal band or a geometric shape. Lines are leveled and laid out with a laser, taped with painter's tape sealed with the base color so the edge does not bleed.
Accent wall plus trim
If the wall has a shiplap, board-and-batten or wainscot treatment we installed, painting it is on the same quote as its own line. Same crew, one trip.

How do you get a straight line where the accent wall meets the other wall?
By cutting it in with a brush rather than relying on tape. On a smooth wall a steady hand and a good angled sash brush do it. On textured drywall, we run tape on the light wall, seal the tape edge with the light color first, then paint the dark color over it; when the tape comes off the line is crisp because any bleed was the same color as the wall.
How many coats does a dark accent wall need?
Two finish coats over a primer tinted toward the color. Without the tinted primer, a navy or black over a white wall can take three or four coats and still look uneven. With it, two coats cover and the color looks the way it did on the chip.
Which wall should be the accent wall?
The one the room faces: the headboard wall in a bedroom, the TV or fireplace wall in a living room, the wall behind the table in a dining room. It usually has no windows or only one, so the color reads as a solid block. A wall with a big window loses most of its color to the glass.
Can you paint just one wall a different color in a rental?
Yes, and painting it back to the original color when you move out is the same job in reverse. Keep the leftover of the original wall color; a dark wall going back to a light color takes a coat of primer and two coats of the light paint.
What sheen is best for an accent wall?
Flat or matte for a dark color. It hides roller marks and small wall flaws, and dark colors look richer without shine. Eggshell if the wall is in a hallway or a kid's room and will get wiped. Anything shinier than eggshell shows every patch and every stroke on a dark wall.
Do you paint the whole room or just the one wall?
Whichever you want. An accent wall is priced per wall, and the rest of the room can be added as a room. If the other walls are scuffed or the old color is off-white and dingy, painting the whole room in the same visit is cheaper than coming back for it.
