Steel entry doors are a steel skin over a foam core, usually with wood or composite edges. They are strong, they hold a deadbolt well, and they are a common choice for a front door that gets painted and for back and side doors. Their weak spots are the bottom edge, where the skin rusts if the paint fails and water sits, and the face, which dents if something hits it.
A rusted or dented steel door usually sits in a frame with problems of its own: jamb feet soft from water, a threshold that no longer seals, a sill with no pan under it. Replacing the whole prehung unit lets us fix that, not hang a new slab in an old frame.
We measure, order the steel unit in the right size, swing and jamb width, and install it with a sill pan, flashing, foam and sealant. Steel doors need to be painted to stay sealed; they come primed or factory painted. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

Why is my steel entry door rusting at the bottom?
Water sits on the bottom edge and the paint there fails first. Once bare steel is wet, it rusts and the rust spreads under the paint. A door that is rusting through is usually sitting on a sill that is holding water, and the whole unit is worth replacing.
Can a dented steel door be repaired?
Small dents can be filled and painted, but the steel does not go back to flat, and a dented skin can separate from the foam. Deep or many dents usually mean replacing the door. For hail dents going through insurance, see our hail damaged door page.
Do steel entry doors need to be painted?
Yes. The paint is what keeps the steel from rusting. Steel doors come primed or factory painted; a primed door needs finish coats soon after install. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or you can paint it yourself.
Is a steel front door more secure than other doors?
A steel door is strong, but security mostly comes from the frame and the strike. A deadbolt that throws into a reinforced strike with long screws into the framing does more than the skin material. We install the lock hardware on every new door.
Do steel doors get hot in the sun?
A dark steel door in full sun can get hot to the touch and dark paint can fade faster. A lighter color helps, and a storm door over a dark steel door can trap heat, so check the maker's guidance.
How long does steel entry door replacement take?
About a day on site for one door in a sound opening, longer with rot repair. The wait is the door order. We give you the expected date when it is placed.
