You run a licensed family child care out of your house and the windows are the old ones.

Window replacement for a home daycare means windows a toddler cannot open or break through and a care room that still has a second way out: tempered or laminated glass on low windows, opening control devices an adult can release, screens that stay in, and an egress-size window where the room needs one. JMB Builders installs them across the Twin Cities on a weekend or closed day. Send photos and we reply within one business day.

  • Safety glass on low windows in play areas
  • Opening limiters an adult can release for escape
  • Installed on a weekend or closed day

A home daycare is a house that gets inspected. Your licensor walks the rooms children use and looks at the windows for a few things: can a child fall through or climb out, can a child break the glass, is there a second way out of the room in a fire, and are the screens and hardware in good repair. Minnesota's family child care rules set what is required; your licensor is the person who tells you how they apply to your rooms, so ask your licensor before the order goes in and we build the windows to that list.

The parts that answer those questions are all order-form choices. Low windows in play areas, anything a child can reach or fall against, get tempered or laminated glass; laminated also stays in the frame when it breaks. Operable windows get a window opening control device, a stop that limits how far the sash opens and releases with a deliberate adult action so the window still works for escape. Casements with a folding crank keep a loose handle away from small hands. Screens are the strong framed type that sit in a track and do not push out. And if a care room is in the basement or has only one door, an egress-size window gives the second way out; a bedroom-size egress casement usually clears it in the smallest frame.

Timing matters as much as parts. We install on a weekend or a day you are closed, one room at a time, with every opening finished, vacuumed and child-safe before the next one is opened, and nothing left for a Monday morning. JMB Builders supplies and installs across the Twin Cities metro; bring your licensor's notes to the free in-home estimate and we write the quote to them.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Your licensor's notes or the window items from your last review, and a list of the rooms children use
  • The days you are closed, so the install does not overlap care hours
  • Which rooms are nap rooms, since those often get room-darkening between-the-glass shades
  • Your choice of style, color and finish, same as any replacement

What JMB supplies

  • A specification per window on the quote: glass type, opening control, screen type and egress sizing where needed
  • In-home measure of each opening before anything is ordered
  • The windows, with tempered or laminated glass, opening control devices and framed screens as specified
  • Install on a closed day, one room at a time, each room finished and vacuumed before the next
  • Removal and haul-away of the old windows
  • Sill pan, shims, low-expansion foam and exterior sealant at every opening
  • Written instructions for releasing the opening control devices, for your staff and your licensor's file
  • Photos of the finished windows in your job folder

How it is priced: per window

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Tempered or laminated glass on the low windows children can reach
  • Window opening control devices on each operable window in care rooms
  • An egress-size unit or an enlarged opening where a care room needs a second way out
  • Between-the-glass shades in nap rooms
  • Insert vs. full-frame install at each opening
  • Weekend or closed-day scheduling

Send a photo of each window in the rooms children use and your licensor's notes if you have them. The quote shows the safety items per window as their own lines.

How long it takes

Most home daycares: one or two closed days, three to five windows a day, every room finished and child-safe the same day. An egress window cut into a basement wall is its own day and is scheduled first.

Situations and options

Low play-area windows in tempered or laminated glass

Any window a child can fall against or reach gets safety glass. Tempered breaks into small pieces; laminated cracks and stays in the frame. Both look clear. Laminated also keeps a thrown toy from leaving a hole.

Opening control devices on every operable window

A stop that limits the sash to a small opening for air and releases with a deliberate adult action for escape. Fitted to double hungs, sliders and casements. Instructions left in writing for staff and the licensor.

Egress casement for a basement or single-door care room

A care room that needs a second way out gets an egress-size casement, in the existing opening where it fits or a cut-down opening where it does not, with a well outside on a basement wall. We check the requirement with your licensor's notes.

Nap room with a sealed-in shade

A room-darkening pleated shade sealed between the glass panes, worked from the frame, so the nap room goes dark with no cords and nothing a toddler can pull down. Pairs with an opening control device on the same window.

Window Replacement for a Home Daycare — Tempered, Limited, Egress: questions, answered

What windows does a home daycare need?

Windows a child cannot fall through, climb out of or break, and a second way out of each care room in a fire. In practice: safety glass on low windows in play areas, window opening control devices on operable windows, framed screens that stay in their track, and an egress-size window where a care room has only one door or is in the basement. Your licensor tells you how the rules apply to your rooms; ask your licensor before ordering, and we build to that list.

Can daycare windows still open for fresh air and fire escape?

Yes. A window opening control device limits the sash to a small opening for ventilation and releases with a deliberate adult action to open fully for escape. The window stays a working window; it just cannot be opened wide by a child. We leave written release instructions for your staff and your licensor's file.

Does a basement daycare room need an egress window?

A room used for care generally needs a second way out, and in a basement that is usually an egress-size window with a well outside, unless the room has a door directly outdoors. Ask your licensor what applies to your room. If an egress window is required, we cut or enlarge the opening, set the window and well, and finish the inside; that work is scheduled first and on its own day.

Should daycare windows have tempered or laminated glass?

Low windows that a child can fall against or hit with a toy should have safety glass of one kind or the other. Tempered breaks into small, blunt pieces. Laminated cracks but stays in the frame, so there is no hole and no loose glass, which many providers prefer in a playroom. Either looks clear. We mark which windows get it on the quote.

Can you replace daycare windows without closing for a week?

Yes. We install on a weekend or a day you are already closed, one room at a time, and every room is finished, vacuumed and child-safe before we leave. Most home daycares are one or two closed days. An egress window cut into a basement wall is its own day and is done first.

Do blinds and cords matter in a daycare window?

Yes. Corded blinds are a strangulation risk and most licensors look for them. A shade sealed between the glass panes has no cord and nothing a child can pull down, which is why we suggest it in nap rooms. Otherwise, cordless shades mounted inside the casing are the standard answer, and the old corded blinds leave with the old windows.
