Replace a Wall of Windows — Stacked and Side-by-Side Units as One Job
The back of your house is mostly glass — a great room or living room wall of stacked windows — and it is fogging, leaking or losing heat all at once.

To replace a wall of windows, every stacked and side-by-side unit is measured, the wall is ordered as one job so the glass and frames line up, and the units are set from staging with temporary support where the old frames carry load. JMB Builders closes the wall each night and protects the floors inside. Twin Cities metro north to St. Cloud. Priced per project; photo reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per project, every unit listed
- Ordered as one wall so lines match
- Wall closed up every night

A wall of windows is a dozen openings acting like one. The units line up in rows and columns, the mulls between them carry the wall above, and the glass near the floor and near doors has to be safety glass. Replace them one at a time over the years and the rows never line up again.
We measure every unit and the wall as a whole: header line, mull posts, sill height, and what is carrying the load between the units. The order goes in as one wall so frame color, glass and grille lines match. Units low to the floor or next to a door are ordered with the safety glass code requires.
Install is staged. Scaffold or a lift goes outside, floors and furniture inside are covered, and the wall comes out one section at a time. Where old mulls carry load, temporary support goes in first. Each section is set, flashed and sealed before the next one opens, and the wall is closed — glass or sheathing — before we leave each day.

Replace a Wall of Windows — Stacked and Side-by-Side Units as One Job: questions, answered
Can a whole wall of windows be replaced at once?
It is ordered and scheduled as one job, then installed one section at a time. That keeps the opening small enough to close every night and lets each section be flashed before the next comes out.
Do floor to ceiling windows need safety glass?
Glass close to the floor, near doors, and large panes in certain positions have to be safety glass under the building code. We mark those units at the measure and order them tempered. The rest of the wall can be standard insulated glass.
Is a wall of windows structural?
The wall above is carried by a header and often by mull posts between the units. In some houses the old window frames ended up carrying part of the load. We check it at the measure and set temporary support before those units come out; a header or post that has to change is sized by an engineer.
How do you protect my floors when replacing a large window wall?
Floors in the room and the path to the door are covered before anything comes out, furniture is moved or covered, and the glass is carried out and in with suction lifters. The room is swept at the end of each day.
Can a wall of windows be replaced in winter?
Yes, with planning. Only one section is open at a time, it is closed before night, and sealants and exterior finishes are applied within their temperature limits. Very cold or windy days may move the schedule.
Should the new window wall have more opening windows?
Often, yes. Old window walls are mostly fixed glass. Swapping some fixed units for casements or awnings in the same openings adds air without changing the look. We show the options at the measure.
