Detached Garage Windows and Service Door — Replaced in One Visit
The house got new windows a few years ago, and the garage out back still has the original windows and a side door that sticks, rots and barely locks.

Replacing the detached garage windows and service door together means one measure, one order and one visit: the old sashes and the rotted walk door out, new windows and a steel prehung door set in pans and flashed, trim matched to the house. JMB Builders does it across the Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud. Priced per project, every opening listed. Photos get a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Windows and walk door in one trip
- Color and trim matched to the house
- Priced per project, each opening on its own line

A detached garage usually gets left out when the house is done. Two or three old windows and a walk door sit there in the original color, and once the house has new white or black frames, the garage is the one thing in the backyard that looks its age. The single garage window page and the garage service door page each cover one piece. This page is doing the garage as a set.
Done together, the windows and the door come from one order, so the frame color and the door color agree with each other and with the house. The trim is built once: one style of brickmould or flat casing, one color, around every opening. And the crew sets up once, which matters on a garage at the back of a lot or on an alley with no power.
Garage walls are often bare studs with siding and no sheathing, and the sills and the bottom of the door jamb are where the rot is. Each opening is opened, rot is cut out and rebuilt, and each unit goes in on a sill pan with flashing tape. Glass is your call: insulated for a heated garage, obscure on the alley side.

What you supply
- A photo of each garage window and the walk door, outside and in
- A photo of the house windows and trim you want the garage to match
- Whether the garage is heated, and which side faces the alley or the neighbors
- Cars, bikes and shelving moved back from the walls at each opening
What JMB supplies
- One in-person measure of each window and the door before ordering
- Windows and a steel prehung service door ordered through ABC Supply together
- Rotted sills, studs and the floor plate at the door rebuilt
- Sill pans and flashing tape at every opening; J-channel worked in on vinyl siding
- Exterior trim in one style and color to match the house
- Lockset and deadbolt on the door, keyed to the house if you want
- Battery tools or a generator where the garage has no power; haul-away
- Painting quoted as its own line, or leave it primed and caulked
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- How many windows the garage has, and their sizes
- Rot at the window sills and at the bottom of the door jamb and floor plate
- Siding on the garage: lap, vinyl, steel or stucco
- Glass: insulated, obscure or tempered where required
- Exterior trim: matching the house style vs. standard brickmould
- Door style, glass in the door and hardware
Send the three photos for each opening and one of the house. The quote lists each window and the door, so you can leave one out.
How long it takes
Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. On site, a garage with two to four windows and a walk door is usually one day, two with heavy rot.

Situations and options
Match the house
Same frame color, grille pattern and trim style as the house windows, so the garage reads as part of the property, not an afterthought.
Heated workshop garage
Insulated glass and an insulated steel door with weatherstrip all around, so the heater is not working against the openings.
Alley-facing privacy
Obscure glass on the windows that face the alley or the neighbors, and a door with no glass or a small high lite, so tools and cars stay out of view.
Detached Garage Windows and Service Door — Replaced in One Visit: questions, answered
Should I replace my garage windows and side door at the same time?
If they are the same age, yes. One order means the windows and the door come in matching colors, the trim is built once around all of them, and the crew sets up once. On a detached garage with no power or a long walk from the street, one visit also saves the setup on a second trip.
Can new detached garage windows match my house windows?
Usually. We order the same frame color and grille pattern as the house, or the same line if the house windows came from a line that is still made. The exterior trim is built in the same style and color as the house. Send a photo of a house window and we tell you how close it will be.
What kind of door goes on the side of a detached garage?
A steel prehung exterior door, the same kind used on a house, in a jamb set on a sill pan so the bottom does not rot again. An insulated door makes sense if the garage is heated. A deadbolt keyed to the house is an easy add while the door is open.
My garage has no power. Can you still replace the windows and door?
Yes. We work from battery tools or bring a generator for the saw. Tell us when you send photos, along with how far the garage sits from where a truck can park.
Do garage windows need to be insulated glass?
In a heated or attached garage, yes, it is worth it. In a cold detached garage, insulated glass still cuts the frost and the drip on the sill, and it is the standard on most new vinyl windows anyway. Obscure glass is an option on either.
How long does it take to replace the windows and door on a detached garage?
Most detached garages with two to four windows and one walk door are done in a day once the order arrives. Heavy rot at the sills or the door's floor plate can add a second day. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.
