The old steel door is dented, rusting at the bottom or flexes when you shut it.

ProVia Legacy steel entry door replacement gets you a 20-gauge steel door, thicker than the 24-gauge skin on most steel doors, built to your opening. JMB Builders measures in person, orders the Legacy door, pulls the old door and frame, and sets the new unit on a sill pan across the Twin Cities metro and north to St. Cloud. Priced per door. Send photos for a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per door, Legacy door included
  • 20-gauge steel skin, foam core
  • Made to order after an in-person measure

Most steel entry doors use a 24-gauge skin. ProVia builds Legacy from 20-gauge galvannealed steel, which ProVia states is 49 percent more steel, and forms the face and the door edge from one continuous piece. That means a door that resists dents better and feels solid when it closes. Inside is a machine-filled polyurethane foam core, composite end caps and a composite lock block behind the lockset and deadbolt.

Legacy comes in woodgrain-textured or smooth steel, stained or painted, with ProVia's ComforTech glass in dual- or triple-pane packages, sidelites and transoms. ProVia states most Legacy styles meet ENERGY STAR criteria; a solid door is the surest way there, and glass changes it. Steel conducts cold, so on a north or west entry keep the glass small or order triple-pane in the lite.

ProVia is on ABC Supply's entry door list; we confirm the Legacy line with our ABC branch before the quote is final. On install day the old door and frame come out, rot at the sill is repaired, and the new unit is set plumb with long screws through the hinge side into the framing, foamed, sealed, trimmed and locked before we leave.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Woodgrain-textured or smooth steel, and stain or paint color
  • Door style and glass, from solid panel to a decorative lite
  • Lockset or multipoint lock, and hardware finish
  • Photos of the door from both sides and a close-up of the sill

What JMB supplies

  • In-person measure of the opening, jamb width and swing before the order
  • The Legacy steel door ordered made to that opening
  • A quote with the door, the install and any rot repair on separate lines
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door, frame and threshold
  • Sill pan, flashing tape, shims, long hinge screws, foam and sealant
  • Threshold, strike and weatherstrip adjusted so the door seals and latches
  • Brickmould or exterior trim and interior casing
  • Painting quoted as its own line, or leave it and paint it yourself

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Smooth vs. woodgrain-textured steel and the finish
  • Glass: solid, small lite, full lite or decorative
  • Sidelites or a transom with the door
  • Multipoint lock vs. a standard lockset and deadbolt
  • Rot at the sill, jamb bottoms or subfloor
  • Front, side or garage-to-house door, and the rules that door has to meet

Send photos of the door inside and out and of the sill. Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.

How long it takes

One Legacy door in a sound opening: about a day on site. Rot repair at the sill can add time. The order goes in after you sign, and the old door stays until the new one is here.

Situations and options

Front door with glass

Legacy in a woodgrain texture with a ComforTech decorative or privacy lite. Order triple-pane in the glass on an entry that faces the wind.

Side or back door, solid

A solid smooth Legacy door painted to the trim color. The simplest way to get a heavy steel door with the best insulation the line offers.

Garage-to-house door

Steel is a common pick for the door between the garage and the house. We check what that door has to meet before the order and order to it.

ProVia Legacy Steel Entry Door Replacement — 20-Gauge, Installed: questions, answered

What gauge is a ProVia Legacy steel door?

ProVia builds Legacy from 20-gauge galvannealed steel. ProVia states that is 49 percent more steel than the 24-gauge skins on typical steel doors. The face and edge are one continuous piece of steel.

Is a 20-gauge steel door better than a 24-gauge door?

A 20-gauge skin is thicker, so it resists dents better and feels more solid when it closes. Insulation comes from the foam core and how well the door seals, not the steel itself. The rest depends on the frame and how the door is set and screwed to the framing.

Does a steel door get cold or frosty in a Minnesota winter?

Steel conducts cold more than fiberglass, so the glass and edges are where frost shows first. Legacy uses a foam core and composite end caps to break the cold path. Keep glass small on north and west entries, or order triple-pane in the lite, and make sure the weatherstrip and sweep are set to seal.

Can a ProVia Legacy door look like wood?

Yes. Legacy comes in a woodgrain-textured steel that can be stained, as well as smooth steel for paint. Up close it reads as textured steel rather than real wood; if the look matters most, a woodgrain fiberglass door is worth comparing.

Where do you get ProVia Legacy doors?

We order through ABC Supply, which lists ProVia among its entry door makers; we confirm the Legacy line with our ABC branch before the quote is final. We are an installer, not a ProVia dealer. If you bought a ProVia door yourself, we have a labor-only page for that.

How long does it take to replace a front door with a ProVia Legacy door?

The door is made to order, so lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. The install is about a day for one door in a sound opening, with the house locked up that night. Rot at the sill adds time and is quoted before it is done.
