You ordered a ProVia through a dealer or a lumberyard and it is arriving on a truck. It still has to go in plumb, on a pan, sealed and adjusted, or the door you paid for will not work like one.
Who installs ProVia doors a homeowner already ordered? JMB Builders does, labor only, across the Twin Cities metro. We are an independent installer, not a ProVia dealer. Fiberglass or steel entry unit, a door with sidelites, or a ProVia storm door: we check the order against your opening, pull the old door, set the new one on a sill pan, screw it into the framing, seal it, hang your hardware and case it. ProVia doors are sold through dealers, so a homeowner who has one on order usually bought it through a lumberyard millwork desk or a dealer showroom that either does not install or wants a lead time that does not fit. The unit shows up on a pallet, often factory finished and wrapped, and the homeowner needs a carpenter. We are an independent installer, not a ProVia dealer; the product, its specs and its paperwork belong to ProVia and the seller. The install is ours.
The install is the same careful sequence as any prehung entry door, with extra care for a finished skin. We check the order sheet against the rough opening before the door ships so the handing, jamb depth and size arrive right. On the day, the old door and threshold come out, the sill and framing are checked for rot, a sill pan goes in, the unit is set with the hinge jamb plumb first, shimmed behind every hinge, screwed through the hinges into the stud, foamed with low-expansion foam and sealed outside. The protective film stays on until the casing is done.
ProVia storm doors are their own job: hung on the entry door's brickmould or the exterior casing, with the closer, the sweep and the expander set so the door closes on its own and seals. We install those labor only as well, on the same trip as the entry door or by themselves.
What you supply
- The ProVia unit: correct handing, jamb width for your wall, rough-opening size, and the order sheet or the sticker on the unit
- Lockset, deadbolt or the handle set for a multipoint lock if the order did not include hardware
- For a storm door: the ProVia storm door and its closer and handle kit as shipped
- Your paint or stain color for the casing, or for the door skin if it arrived primed; finishing is quoted as its own line
What JMB supplies
- A check of your order sheet against the opening before the door is built, no charge
- Removal and haul-away of the old door, jamb, casing and threshold
- Sill pan, flashing tape, shims, long hinge screws, low-expansion foam and exterior sealant
- Subfloor or framing repair at the sill when we find rot, quoted first
- Interior casing in a standard profile or matched to the house; exterior trim fitted and sealed
- Your lockset, deadbolt or multipoint handle installed and the sill adjusted to the sweep
- Storm door hung, closer and sweep set, expander adjusted, on the same trip when there is one
- Photos of the finished door in your job folder
- Painting or staining of the casing, or of a primed door skin, as its own line
How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos within one business day. What moves the number:
- Single entry door vs. a unit with one or two sidelites or a transom, which is wider, heavier and slower to set square
- Rot at the sill or the bottom of the old jambs, common on entry doors over a stoop
- Whether the rough opening matches the new unit or has to be reframed
- Exterior trim: reusing the brickmould on the unit vs. new trim matched to the house
- A ProVia storm door hung on the same trip
- Finishing a primed skin or the new casing, quoted as its own line
Send a photo of the old door from outside and inside, one of the sill and the bottoms of the jambs, and the ProVia order sheet. We check the order before it is final.
How long it takes
A single ProVia entry unit: about half a day. A door with sidelites or a transom: most of a day. A storm door on the same trip adds a couple of hours.

Situations and options
Fiberglass entry units
ProVia's fiberglass lines, such as Signet, usually arrive factory finished and wrapped. We keep the film on through the install, set the unit on a pan with the hinge jamb plumb, screw the hinges into the stud, foam, seal and case it, then peel the film last.
Steel entry units
A steel ProVia unit, often a Legacy series, installs the same way. Steel skins are prefinished and show dents, so the unit is carried and set with care and the exterior trim is fitted without prying on the slab.
Doors with sidelites and transoms
A mulled unit goes in as one piece. We bring two people, confirm the rough opening before the order is final, and set it so the sidelite glass is plumb and the door swings without touching the mull. New exterior trim is usually needed around a wider unit.
ProVia storm doors
Hung on the brickmould or exterior casing with the frame plumb, the closer bracket into solid wood, the sweep and expander set to the sill, and the handle and latch aligned so it closes on its own and latches. Labor only, on its own or with the entry door.

You order the door through a dealer or a lumberyard; we check the order against your opening, remove the old door, set the new one on a sill pan, seal it, install your hardware and case it. Are you a ProVia dealer?
No. We are an independent installer and a licensed Minnesota residential building contractor, BC809005. We do not sell ProVia doors, and we make no claims about the product beyond what the manufacturer prints. The door, its specs and its warranty paperwork come from ProVia and the dealer or lumberyard that sold it. The install, the flashing and the trim are our work.
Does a ProVia door come painted, or do I need to finish it?
It depends on how it was ordered. Many ProVia entry units are ordered factory finished, and they arrive painted or stained with a protective film on the skin, which we leave on until the casing is done. If the order sheet says primed, the skin needs a coat before it sits through a Minnesota summer, and we quote that as its own line, or you paint it after we hang it. Either way we install it first so the finish is not scuffed on the way in.
Can you install a ProVia storm door too?
Yes, labor only, on the same trip as the entry door or by itself. A ProVia storm door hangs on the entry door's brickmould or exterior casing, so we check that the trim is sound and square and fix it if it is not. Then the frame is set plumb, the closer bracket goes into solid wood, the sweep and expander are set to the sill, and the latch is aligned so the door closes on its own and catches.
What should I check on the ProVia order before it is built?
The handing, the jamb width for your wall, the rough-opening size, whether brickmould is included, and whether the hardware and the finish are on the order. A factory-built unit cannot be cut to fit, so those have to be right before it is made. Send us the order sheet and a photo of the old door inside and out, and we check it against your opening at no charge before you sign.
What if there is rot under the old door when you take it out?
We find it on a fair number of entry doors, usually at the sill and the bottoms of the jambs where water sat on a stoop. We show you what is there, quote the subfloor or framing repair before going further, and then set the new unit on a sill pan so the same thing does not happen again. A ProVia door with a rot-resistant jamb bottom still needs a sound sill under it.
