Black Patio Door Replacement — Dark Frames Inside and Out
You want the black frame and the view it makes. The question is which door material holds that color on a west wall in July without the panel dragging in the track.

Black patio door replacement is a new slider or French unit ordered with a black factory finish, inside and out or exterior only, in a frame that can take a dark color in Minnesota sun — fiberglass or aluminum-clad wood rather than plain vinyl. JMB Builders orders black patio doors across the Twin Cities metro and installs them in the existing opening with a sill pan, flashing and matching black hardware. Priced per door, reply within one business day.
- Priced per door, black factory finish included
- Fiberglass or clad frames that hold black in sun
- Black inside and out, or black exterior with white interior

A black patio door frames the view like a picture and makes a white room look finished. It is the most-ordered color on contemporary sliders right now and it shows up on traditional houses too, where a black door and black windows read as a deliberate choice. The style decision is easy. The material decision is where people get burned.
A black surface in direct sun gets much hotter than a white one. Vinyl grows with heat, and a dark vinyl frame on a south or west wall can grow enough in summer that the sliding panel rubs and the latch fights you, then shrink back in January. Fiberglass and aluminum-clad wood move far less, which is why nearly every manufacturer's black patio door is built on one of those frames. Some vinyl lines offer a dark exterior laminate that performs well on a shaded wall; we quote it when the exposure allows.
We order black sliders and French pairs from options such as Pella, Andersen, Marvin, ProVia and Milgard, with black hardware and black screens to match, and install them the same as any patio door. If you are doing black windows at the same time, we match the door to the window line so the blacks are the same black; see our matching window and door colors page.

What you supply
- Black inside and out, or black exterior with a white or wood interior
- Which direction the door faces and how much sun it gets, so we steer the frame material
- Slider or French pair, panel count, and the glass and grille pattern if any
- Paint color for the new casing — black, white or matched — quoted as its own line
What JMB supplies
- Measurement of the opening and the order for the black door, screen and hardware as one unit
- A frame recommendation for your exposure: fiberglass, clad wood or a dark-laminate vinyl where it fits
- Removal and haul-away of the old patio door, frame and trim
- Sill pan, flashing tape, backer rod, low-expansion foam and black or color-matched exterior sealant
- Subfloor or framing repair at the sill, quoted from the photos
- Interior casing and exterior trim; black-finished aluminum trim or brickmould outside where it suits the siding
- Painting of the new casing, black or white, when you want it, quoted as a separate line
- Photos of the finished door in your job folder
How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Frame material: fiberglass or clad wood for black; dark-laminate vinyl where the exposure allows
- Black inside and out vs black exterior with a white interior
- Slider vs French pair, and the width of the unit
- Glass package and grille pattern; black grilles between or on the glass
- Matching black hardware, screen and exterior trim
- Rot at the subfloor or framing once the old door is out
- Painting the new casing black or white, quoted as a separate line
Send photos of the door inside and out and tell us which way it faces. If you have or are getting black windows, send a photo of one so the door is matched to that line.
How long it takes
One black two-panel slider in a sound opening: most of a day on site. Black factory finishes are built to order and arrive several weeks after the quote is approved, longer than stock white.

Situations and options
Black fiberglass slider
The most common black patio door. Factory black inside and out, black hardware, black screen. Fiberglass holds the color and the dimension on any exposure, including a west wall with no overhang.
Black clad wood with a wood interior
Black aluminum cladding outside, bare or prefinished wood inside for a house with stained trim. Gives the black exterior and the warm interior at once. The highest-priced frame of the three.
Black exterior, white interior
Many lines let you order a black outside and a white inside, which suits a house with white trim and a dark exterior scheme. Costs less than black on both faces and keeps the interior casing simple.
Dark-laminate vinyl on a shaded wall
Some vinyl lines offer a black or bronze exterior laminate over a white frame. On a north or east wall under an overhang it holds up. We will tell you if your exposure is too sunny for it and steer you to fiberglass.
Black Patio Door Replacement — Dark Frames Inside and Out: questions, answered
Do black patio doors fade or get too hot in the sun?
A black factory finish on fiberglass or aluminum-clad wood holds its color for decades without chalking. The frame does get hot to the touch on a sunny afternoon, which is normal and not a problem for those materials. The issue to avoid is black on a plain vinyl frame in full sun, where heat growth can make the panel drag. Pick the right frame and the color is not a worry.
Can I get a black patio door with a white interior?
Yes. Most lines let you order a black exterior with a white interior, and it is a common pick for a house with white trim inside and a dark exterior. It costs less than black on both faces, and the interior casing stays white to match the rest of the room. If you want black inside, order it black inside; painting a white frame black later never looks as good.
Will a black patio door match my black windows?
Only if they come from the same manufacturer and line. Black is not one color; one maker's black is warmer or glossier than another's, and the difference shows side by side on a wall. We match the door to the windows you have or are ordering, and when the lines are different we show you both blacks together before you decide.
Does a black patio door come with black hardware and a black screen?
It should, and we order it that way. Handles, locks, the screen frame and the exterior trim all come in black from the same manufacturer so nothing silver or white breaks up the frame. Interior casing can be painted black to carry the frame line out, or white for contrast; painting is quoted as its own line.
Is a black sliding door a good idea on a traditional house?
Yes, when the rest of the exterior supports it. A black door and black windows on a white, gray or tan house read as a deliberate choice; a single black door on a house full of white windows can look like an odd one out. If you are replacing one door now and the windows later, order the door in the line you plan to use for the windows so the blacks match when you get there.
Is bronze or black better for a patio door frame?
Both are dark factory finishes on the same frames and hold up the same way. Black is sharper against white walls and glass; dark bronze is softer and matches brown roofs, stone and cedar. The choice is style, not performance. Hold a sample of each against your siding and trim in daylight before you decide, and we can bring both to the in-home estimate.
