A patio door is mostly glass, and the glass is tempered: when it breaks it goes to pebbles all at once, not a crack you can live with for a week. The first job is closing the opening. Plywood screwed over the outside, or heavy plastic taped tight inside, keeps the weather out until the replacement comes in. Photograph everything before it is swept up or covered.
Then the question is how much of the door is damaged. Hail that cracks a fixed panel in a sound frame means a new glass unit or a new panel. A limb or wind that hits hard enough to bend the frame, crack the sill or rip a hinged door off its hinges means the whole door comes out. So does a door whose maker no longer makes the panel. We tell you which it is from the photos.
You file the claim and deal with your insurer. We give you the photos and a line-item scope — glass, panel, screen, frame, trim — meet your adjuster to walk the door if you want us there, and do the work once it is approved. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your deductible, and we do not.

Situations and options
Glass unit or fixed panel
Hail or a limb cracked the glass but the frame, track and sill are sound. A new tempered glass unit or fixed panel is ordered to the door's specs and set in the existing frame. Trim and the wall are not touched.
Operating panel
The sliding panel took the hit: bent stile, cracked glass, broken rollers. A new operating panel from the same manufacturer goes in the old frame, with new rollers and the lock adjusted.
Whole door
The frame is bent, the sill cracked, the hinges torn out, or parts are no longer made. The old door comes out, the opening is checked for rot and set up with a sill pan and flashing, and the new door goes in square.

Can you replace just the glass in a storm damaged sliding patio door?
Often, yes. If the frame, track and sill are sound, a new tempered glass unit or panel is ordered to the door's specs and set in the old frame. It needs the brand or the glass etching and the exact size. If the frame is bent or the maker no longer makes the panel, the whole door has to be replaced.
What should I do right away if my patio door glass shattered in a storm?
Take photos of the door and the glass before you touch anything. Then sweep up with shoes on, and close the opening: plywood screwed over the outside, or heavy plastic taped tight inside. Keep receipts for the materials. Leave the permanent repair until your insurer has seen the damage or the photos.
Does replacement patio door glass have to be tempered?
Yes. Glass in a door is safety glass under the building code, and patio doors use tempered glass that breaks into small pebbles instead of shards. Every replacement glass unit for a patio door is ordered tempered, and the tempering mark is etched in a corner.
Can wind damage a patio door without breaking the glass?
Yes. Wind can catch a hinged patio door and tear the hinges out of the jamb, or slam a slider hard enough to bend the panel or jump the rollers off the track. A door that no longer latches, drags on the track or lets light through at the corner after a storm should be photographed and listed with the rest of the damage.
Do you meet the insurance adjuster for a damaged patio door?
Yes, when you want us there. We walk the door with the adjuster using the photos and line items you already have, and point out frame, sill and track damage that is easy to miss when the broken glass is the obvious part. You file the claim and talk to your insurer; we explain the damage and the repair.
Can a contractor cover my deductible on a patio door claim?
No. Minnesota law bars a contractor from waiving, rebating or paying your insurance deductible, and JMB Builders does not. The deductible is your share of the repair and is paid as part of the job.
