Black Interior Doors — Factory Finished or Painted, Hung and Cased
You want black doors against white walls and trim, and you want them to look like they came that way, not like a weekend paint job with brush marks.

Black interior doors are either factory-finished black slabs or primed doors painted black on site, hung as slabs in your existing jambs or as prehung units with new casing in black or white. JMB Builders supplies the doors, hangs them, fits black or brass hardware and cases them across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door, with a reply within one business day; painting is listed as its own line when the doors are not factory-finished.
- Priced per door, doors supplied
- Factory black or primed and painted on site
- White casing for contrast or black casing to match

A black door against white trim is the simplest way to make a hallway look designed. It works on a flat slab, a one- or two-panel Shaker and a five-panel; it works less well on a molded six-panel colonial, where the raised profile fights the color. Most people do a whole floor so every door in a sightline matches, or just the main hall and leave the closets white.
The finish is the whole job. Black shows every brush mark, dust nib and dent that white hides, and a flat black on a hollow core door looks cheap fast. There are two good routes. Factory-finished black doors come with a sprayed, cured finish that is even and hard, in a limited set of blacks and styles, and they cost more per door. Primed doors painted on site in a satin or semi-gloss black let you pick any black and match it to your hardware, and that painting is its own line on the quote — sprayed in place or brushed and rolled with the right enamel.
Hardware finishes the look: matte black levers and hinges disappear into the door, brass or brushed nickel stands out against it. Casing can stay white for contrast, which is the common choice, or go black to match the door for a heavier, more modern frame. We supply doors from options such as Masonite, Jeld-Wen, Trimlite and Woodgrain, hang them as slabs or prehung, and finish them when you want.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Factory-finished black vs primed doors painted on site
- Slabs into existing jambs vs prehung units with new casing
- Door style and core: a flat hollow slab vs a solid core panel door
- Casing left white vs painted black, and whether the casing is new or existing
- Hardware finish and whether hinges are replaced to match
- How many doors in one visit — the per-door price falls as the count rises
- Painting the doors and casing, quoted as a separate line
Send a photo of your hallway with two or three doors in it, a close-up of one door's hinge, and the count. Say if your trim is white and staying white. We list factory black and painted black as two options.
How long it takes
Factory black slabs into existing jambs: six to eight in a day. Primed doors: hung the same day, then painted on a return trip once they are fitted and adjusted. Factory black is ordered after the quote is approved.

Situations and options
Factory-finished black slabs
Sprayed and cured at the factory, in the maker's black, usually on flat and Shaker styles. The hardest and most even finish, no painting line, limited to the styles and blacks the line offers. Hung as slabs or prehung.
Primed doors, painted black on site
Any style, any black, matched to your hardware or your kitchen. Hung first, then painted in place with an enamel that levels out and cures hard. The painting is its own line. The route when you want a specific black or a style the factory does not finish.
Black doors, white casing
The common look: the door is the dark shape, the white casing frames it against the white wall. Existing casing can stay as is or get a fresh coat. Works on any style of door.
Black doors and black casing
Door and casing in one color for a heavier modern frame. Usually paired with flat casing and black hardware. The casing is new or repainted; either way it is listed as its own line.
Black Interior Doors — Factory Finished or Painted, Hung and Cased: questions, answered
Is it better to buy black interior doors or paint them black?
Factory-finished black doors have the harder, more even finish and skip the painting line, but they come in a limited set of blacks and styles, mostly flat and Shaker. Painting primed doors on site lets you pick any black and any style, and done with the right enamel it looks nearly as good. If your style is in the factory line, buy it black. If not, or you want a specific black, paint.
Do black interior doors show scratches and dust?
More than white, yes. Dust shows on a flat black and wipes off; scratches show as lighter lines. A factory-cured finish or a hard enamel resists both better than a wall paint. Solid core doors take knocks without denting, which matters more on black because a dent in a white door hides and a dent in a black door does not. A satin sheen hides more than matte or gloss.
Should the trim be black too if the doors are black?
Either works; it is a style call. White casing around a black door is the common choice and gives contrast on a white wall. Black casing with black doors makes a heavier frame and suits flat casing and a modern house. Baseboard usually stays white in both cases so the floor line reads. Hold a sample against your wall before you decide.
Can I just paint my existing doors black?
You can, and painting is a service we quote. But a molded six-panel hollow core door painted black still looks like a six-panel hollow core door, and the raised profile fights the color. Black looks best on flat and Shaker doors with some weight to them. If your doors are the cheap colonial type, a new flat or Shaker door painted black is the better spend. We will tell you which case you are in from a photo.
What hardware looks right on black doors?
Matte black levers and hinges disappear into the door, which suits a modern look. Brass, bronze or brushed nickel stands out as a contrast and suits a traditional or warmer house. Match the hinges to the lever so a nickel hinge does not show against a black door with brass hardware. New hardware is its own line, or we reuse yours.
Should I do black doors on the whole house or just some?
Do every door you can see in one sightline. Usually that means a whole floor, or the main hall with bedroom and bath doors, while closets inside rooms stay white. A single black door in a hall of white ones reads as an odd one out unless it is a deliberate accent on an office or a pantry. Upstairs and downstairs can differ since you never see them together.
