Black Front Door Replacement — Finish, Heat and Hardware Finish Picked

Black is the most asked-for front door color right now. It looks right on white siding and brick, and it has three things to get right: the finish, the heat, and the hardware.

A black front door replacement is a new prehung fiberglass or steel door in a factory-applied black finish, with the frame and brickmould in black or white and the hardware finish chosen to go with it. JMB Builders supplies and installs them across the Twin Cities metro and checks the color against the door's sun exposure before ordering. Priced per door, quoted from photos, and we reply within one business day.

  • Priced per door, door supplied
  • Factory black finish, fiberglass or steel
  • Exposure checked before a dark door is ordered

A black door shows every flaw and every shortcut. A brushed-on black over a white primer chips at the edges and shows gray at the lock bore within a couple of winters. Black on a cheap steel door chalks in the sun. Black on a door that gets afternoon sun with a storm door in front of it can get hot enough that the skin and the weatherstrip suffer. None of that is a reason not to have a black door. It is a reason to order it right.

The finish comes first. A factory-applied black on a smooth or woodgrain fiberglass door, from options such as Therma-Tru, ProVia, Masonite or JELD-WEN, is cured in a booth and wraps the edges and the lite frames. Many makers list which dark colors they allow in direct sun and whether a storm door can go in front of them, and we read that sheet with you. A steel door in black is fine under an overhang or on a north or east wall; on a south or west wall with no roof we steer to fiberglass. The frame is the second decision: black brickmould and jamb for a full black surround, or a white frame with a black slab for a framed look. The third is hardware. Matte black disappears into the door; polished or satin brass stands out and is the current pairing; stainless and nickel read cool against black.

The install is the same careful entry door job: old unit out, sill checked, sill pan and flashing tape lapped to the housewrap, frame set plumb, low-expansion foam, sealant that matches the black or the trim color, casing inside. The door stays wrapped until the trim is on because a scratch in a black finish cannot be hidden. If you want a black door painted on site rather than factory finished, that is quoted as a separate line with an exterior door enamel made for dark colors — or leave the door primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

What you supply

  • Photos of the door from outside and inside, and which direction it faces
  • Whether there is a roof or overhang over the door and whether a storm door is on it now
  • Fiberglass or steel, smooth or woodgrain, and the glass layout
  • Black frame and brickmould, or a white or trim-color frame with a black slab
  • Hardware finish: matte black, brass, nickel or stainless, or the handleset you bought

What JMB supplies

  • A check of the maker's sun and storm door guidance for black before the door is ordered
  • Measurement of the opening and the order for a factory-finished black prehung door
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door, frame and trim
  • Check of the sill and framing once the old door is out, quoted from the photos
  • Sill pan, flashing tape, low-expansion foam and color-matched exterior sealant
  • Brickmould or flat trim in black or the trim color, and interior casing
  • Handleset and deadbolt installed in the finish you chose
  • A venting storm door, or no storm door, when the exposure calls for it, quoted as its own line
  • Painting a door black on site with an exterior door enamel, quoted as its own line
  • Photos of the finished door in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Fiberglass vs. steel, and smooth vs. woodgrain under the black
  • Factory black finish vs. painted on site
  • Black frame and brickmould vs. a white or trim-color frame
  • Glass in the door, and a sidelite or transom finished to match
  • Hardware finish and whether a long pull set is ordered
  • Rot at the old sill or frame
  • A venting storm door or storm door removal, quoted as a separate line
  • Painting on site, quoted as a separate line

Tell us which way the door faces and send a photo showing what is above it. That decides whether black is ordered in fiberglass, steel, or with a storm door.

How long it takes

One factory-finished black door in a sound opening: most of a day on site. Painting on site adds a day or two before the install. The door is ordered after you approve the quote.

Situations and options

Black slab, black frame

Door, jamb and brickmould all black for a solid dark surround. Reads as one piece from the street. Interior face can be black or painted to match the inside trim on most lines.

Black slab, white frame

A black door inside a white or trim-color frame. The door reads as a panel inside a border. The common pick on white siding where the window trim is white.

Black with brass hardware

Satin or polished brass handleset and deadbolt against the black. The current pairing on colonials and farmhouses. Brass lacquer wears over time; unlacquered brass is meant to.

Black with matte black hardware

Hardware that disappears into the door for a plain modern look. Pairs with a long vertical pull and a column of small lites.

Black Front Door Replacement — Finish, Heat and Hardware Finish Picked: questions, answered

Does a black front door get too hot in the sun?

It can on a south or west wall with no overhang, and more so with a storm door in front of it that traps heat. Many door makers list which dark colors they allow in direct sun and what they say about storm doors over them. A factory-finished fiberglass door in black is the common answer for a sunny entry; a black steel door is better under a roof or on a north or east wall. We check the sheet for your door before ordering.

Should a black front door be factory finished or painted?

Factory finished where the line offers black. The coat is cured in a booth, wraps the edges and the lite frames, and is the finish the maker stands behind in sun. Painting on site works with an exterior door enamel made for dark colors and is quoted as its own line, but it chips sooner at the edges and the bore. If you already have a door you like, painting it is a separate service.

Should the door frame be black too or white?

Both are done. A black frame and brickmould makes the whole entry read as one dark piece and matches black windows. A white frame around a black slab frames the door like a picture and fits white window trim. Send a photo of the front of the house and we will show you both on paper before ordering.

What hardware finish goes with a black front door?

Satin or polished brass is the current pairing and stands out against the black. Matte black hardware disappears into the door for a plain modern look. Satin nickel and stainless read cool and work with gray or white siding. We install the handleset from the door order or the set you bought.

Fiberglass or steel for a black front door?

Fiberglass for most entries. It holds a dark factory finish in sun, does not dent and does not chalk. Steel gives a flatter face and is fine in black under a porch roof or on a wall that does not get afternoon sun. A black steel door in full sun is the one that gets hot enough to matter, so for that wall we order fiberglass.

Can I keep my storm door with a new black front door?

It depends on the exposure and what the door maker says. A storm door in front of a black door on a sunny wall traps heat between the two, and some makers limit their coverage for it. A storm door that vents through a screen, or no storm door, is the usual answer on a south or west entry. On a shaded entry a standard storm door is fine. We quote the storm door as its own line either way.
