A front door for full sun on a south or west wall has to be chosen for the heat before it is chosen for looks. JMB Builders replaces sun-facing entry doors across the Twin Cities metro: we go over the maker's color and finish limits, the storm door question and the glass, order a prehung door that fits, and set it in a sill pan with flashing. Priced per door, quoted from photos, with a reply within one business day.
- Priced per door, door supplied
- Finish and color checked against sun exposure
- Storm door heat buildup addressed

A south or west facing front door with no porch roof takes the hardest exposure on the house. Summer afternoon sun bakes the face of the door, then a January night drops it far below zero. Clear finishes on wood break down and peel, dark paint fades, and a dark door can get hot enough that the skin and the weatherstrip suffer. Most of what goes wrong with these doors comes from the order: color first, material second, exposure never.
We start with the exposure. Which way the door faces, whether there is an overhang, and whether there is a storm door in front of it. Then the material and finish. Fiberglass and steel doors with a factory finish are common picks for full sun; a wood door can work under a deep overhang but needs its finish kept up. Door makers publish which colors they allow in direct sun and what they say about storm doors, and we read that sheet with you before anything is ordered.
The storm door is the part people miss. Glass in front of a dark entry door traps heat in the space between them. Many door makers warn about that heat, and some limit their coverage for it. The choices are a lighter door color, a storm door that vents, a screen in summer, or no storm door at all. Install is the same careful job as any entry door: sill pan, flashing lapped over the housewrap, frame set plumb and square, foam, sealant and trim. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

How it is priced: per door
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Fiberglass, steel or wood, and factory-finished vs. finished on site
- Color: some dark colors are only offered with a factory finish built for sun
- Glass in the door, and sidelights or a transom
- Rot at the sill or frame of the old door
- Whether a storm door is replaced, changed to a venting model or removed
- Siding type and how the outside is trimmed
- Painting or staining on site, quoted as a separate line
Send photos of the door from both sides, a wide shot showing the overhang above it, and tell us which way it faces.
How long it takes
One prehung entry door in a sound opening: most of a day on site. Add time for sill repair, sidelights or a storm door. The door is ordered after you approve the quote.

Situations and options
Fiberglass, factory finished
Smooth or woodgrain skin with the color or stain applied at the factory. A common pick for a south or west door in full sun, and the color list for direct sun is usually printed in the maker's literature.
Steel, light or factory-finished color
An insulated steel door in a lighter color holds up in sun. Dark steel absorbs more heat and is more sensitive to a storm door in front of it, so we check the maker's limits before ordering.
Wood under an overhang
A wood door can face south or west when a porch roof or deep overhang shades it. The finish still needs regular upkeep, and the top and bottom edges have to be sealed.
Storm door choices
A storm door that vents through a screen in summer, a full-view door used only in winter, or no storm door. The right answer depends on the entry door color and the maker's guidance.
Front Door for Full Sun — South and West Facing Door Replacement: questions, answered
What is the best front door for direct sunlight?
For a south or west facing door with no overhang, a fiberglass or steel door with a factory-applied finish in a color the maker allows for full sun is the usual pick. Wood can work when a porch roof shades it. The finish and the color matter as much as the material. We read the maker's guidance for your exposure with you before the door is ordered.
Why does my west facing door keep fading and peeling?
Afternoon sun is the hardest exposure on a door, and it breaks down clear finishes and stains fastest, along with dark paint. A wood door that was refinished on site often peels again within a few seasons. Replacing it with a factory-finished door, or a lighter color, deals with the cause. If the door is sound, refinishing is another option, quoted as its own line.
Can a storm door over a dark front door cause warping?
Heat builds up in the space between a storm door's glass and the entry door, and on a dark door in full sun it can get very hot. Many door makers warn about it and some limit their coverage when a storm door is used in front of certain colors. Read the warranty sheet for your door or send it to us. Venting storm doors, a summer screen or a lighter door color are the usual answers.
Is a south facing front door replacement any different from a normal one?
The install is the same: sill pan, flashing, frame set plumb and square, foam, sealant and trim. What changes is the choosing. Color, finish, glass and the storm door all have to be picked for the heat. We go through those with you before the order goes in.
Can I get a black front door if it faces west?
Often yes, but check the maker's list. Some offer dark colors on doors facing full sun only with a factory finish made for it, and some say no storm door over it. We confirm the color is allowed for your exposure before ordering, so the door you get is one the maker stands behind.
Should I keep my storm door when I replace a sun-facing front door?
It depends on the new door color and what the door maker says. A storm door adds a layer against wind and snow, but on a dark door in full sun it can trap a lot of heat. A storm door that vents through a screen, or taking the storm door off, is often the better choice. We price the options as separate lines so you can decide.
