The glass ticks when the wind blows, a strip of vinyl around it has popped out, or there is a gap you can slide paper into.

A loose glazing bead on a vinyl window lets the glass rattle, whistle and leak at the edge. JMB Builders re-seats the glass and replaces snapped or shrunken glazing beads across the Twin Cities metro: we match the bead profile, pull the old stops, set the glass back on its setting blocks with new glazing tape where it is needed, and snap in new beads. Priced per window, quoted from photos, reply within one business day.
- Priced per window
- Glazing beads matched to the profile
- Glass re-set on setting blocks

In most vinyl windows the sealed glass unit sits in the sash on small setting blocks and is held in by glazing beads: thin vinyl strips that snap into a channel around the glass, usually on the inside. Behind them is glazing tape or a bead of sealant that keeps air and water out at the edge of the glass.
Vinyl moves a lot between a July afternoon and a January night. Over the years beads shrink and pull back from the corners, the snap legs crack, and a bead pops out on its own or gets pried out by a screen or a curtain rod. Once one side is loose, the glass can shift, rattle in the wind, and let air and water past the edge. A unit that moves can also stress its own seal, which is one road to a foggy window later.
This is a small repair when it is caught early. We match the bead profile, order new beads from the maker or cut a matching profile, take the loose ones out, check the setting blocks and tape, re-center the glass, and snap new beads in tight at the corners. If the glass is already fogged or cracked, we price the new sealed unit at the same time instead of re-seating a unit that is failing.

How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- One loose bead vs. all four sides replaced
- Whether the maker still sells the bead or a matching profile has to be found
- Glazing tape that has failed and has to be replaced, not just the beads
- Exterior-glazed windows that are worked from outside or a ladder
- Large fixed glass that takes two people to support
- Number of windows on the same visit
A close-up of the bead where it meets the corner, plus the frame label, usually tells us the profile before we come out.
How long it takes
Beads usually take one to two weeks to arrive. On site, most windows take under an hour each.

Situations and options
Re-seat and re-bead
The glass is clear and sound; the beads are loose, cracked or shrunk. New beads, setting blocks checked, glass re-centered. The most common version of this repair.
Re-tape and re-bead
Air or water is getting past the glass edge. Beads come out, the old glazing tape is cleaned off, new tape goes on, and the glass is set back with new beads.
Glass already failing
Fog between the panes or a crack. Re-seating a failing unit wastes the visit, so we price a new sealed glass unit and set it with new beads instead.
Loose Glazing Bead on Vinyl Window — Glass Re-Seated, Stops Replaced: questions, answered
Why is the glass rattling in my vinyl window?
The glazing beads that hold the glass in the sash have loosened, shrunk or popped out, or a setting block under the glass has slipped. With nothing holding it tight, the glass moves in the wind. New beads and re-set blocks stop it.
Can I just push a glazing bead back in?
Sometimes, if the bead is whole and the snap leg is not cracked. If it popped out because it shrank or the leg broke, it will come out again. A new bead cut to fit is the lasting fix.
Are glazing beads on the inside or outside of a vinyl window?
On most vinyl replacement windows they are on the inside, so the glass is removed from inside the house. Some windows are glazed from the outside. A photo of the sash at the glass edge shows which kind you have.
Can a loose glazing bead make a window leak?
Yes. The bead holds the glass tight against the glazing tape or sealant. When it loosens, air and wind-driven water can get past the glass edge and into the sash or onto the sill. Re-taping and new beads close it up.
Where do you get replacement glazing beads?
From the window maker's parts line when the window can be identified from its label or glass code. When it cannot, we match the profile from a sample with a bead that fits the same channel.
Is a loose glazing bead the same problem as foggy glass?
No. A loose bead is the holder; fog between the panes is a failed seal inside the glass unit. They can happen together, because glass that moves can stress its seal. If the glass is already fogged, we replace the sealed unit rather than re-seat it.
