Replace Kitchen Window During Remodel — Sized to the New Layout

The cabinets are ordered, the counter is going up an inch and the sink is moving.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

To replace a kitchen window during a remodel, settle the new counter height, backsplash, sink spot and upper cabinets first, then size the window to them. JMB Builders measures in person, reframes the opening if it moves or changes size, orders the window through ABC Supply and sets it before drywall and counters. Twin Cities metro. Priced per opening; photos get a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.

  • Priced per opening, window supplied
  • Sized to the new counter, sink and cabinets
  • Set before drywall and countertop templating
Two new casement windows with fresh pine trim at a corner kitchen sink

In a kitchen remodel the window answers to the cabinets. The counter height plus the backsplash sets the lowest the sill can sit. The upper cabinets on each side set how wide the opening can be. The sink sets where the window should be centered. If any of those change in the new plan, the old window opening may not fit, and that is the time to fix it: the drywall is already off and the counters are not in yet.

So the window gets decided with the cabinet layout, not after it. We look at the plan, measure the opening against it, and tell you whether the old opening works as is, needs to be raised, shortened or shifted, or should be wider. A moved or wider opening means a new header and reframing; a large span is sized by an engineer, and JMB pulls the permit when the job needs one. Outside, the siding is patched where the opening changed.

The style matters more here than anywhere else in the house, because you reach over a counter to open it. Casements and awnings crank from a low corner; a slider pushes sideways. The window goes in before the counters are templated, so the stool or a stone sill can be planned with the counter. Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • The kitchen plan or cabinet drawing: counter height, backsplash, sink spot, upper cabinets
  • Who is running the rest of the remodel, and the cabinet and counter dates
  • Your pick of window style, color, glass and grilles
  • Whether the sill should be wood, PVC or stone to match the counter
  • Photos of the window from inside and outside and of the wall around it

What JMB supplies

  • An in-person measure of the opening against the new kitchen plan before ordering
  • Reframing for a raised, lowered, shifted or wider opening, with a header to size
  • The window ordered through ABC Supply, plus any other windows in the same order so they match
  • Old window out and hauled away; floors and cabinets in the room protected
  • Window set in a sill pan, flashed, foamed and sealed before insulation and drywall
  • Siding patched outside where the opening changed
  • Interior trim after drywall; photos in your job folder

How it is priced: per opening

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Same opening vs. raised, shortened, shifted or widened
  • A new header and framing where the opening moves or grows
  • Exterior patching: lap siding, stucco or brick
  • Window style, size, frame material and glass
  • Sill and stool to suit the counter: wood, PVC or stone
  • Other windows in the house added to the same order

Send the cabinet drawing or a sketch with the counter height and sink spot marked, plus photos of the window inside and out.

How long it takes

Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote, so order as soon as the cabinet layout is final. A same-size window goes in in a day or less; a reframed opening adds about a day for framing and patching.

Situations and options

Same opening, new window

The old opening already clears the new counter and lines up with the sink. The window is swapped while the kitchen is torn up, and only the trim changes.

Raised or shortened opening

The new counter or a taller backsplash runs into the old sill. The opening is framed up from below, the window is ordered shorter, and the outside is patched.

Shifted or wider opening

The sink moved, or you want more light over a longer counter. A new header and framing put the opening where the new kitchen needs it.

Garden window over the sink

A box window that projects past the wall for plants and light. It needs a supported opening and a roof cap; it has its own page.

Replace Kitchen Window During Remodel — Sized to the New Layout: questions, answered

When should the kitchen window go in during a remodel?

After the walls are opened and any reframing is done, and before insulation, drywall and the countertops. Setting it before the counters are templated lets the stool or stone sill be planned with the counter. Order it as soon as the cabinet layout is final, because the lead time depends on the brand.

Can a kitchen window be raised for a taller backsplash?

Yes. The sill is framed up to clear the new counter and backsplash, a shorter window is ordered to the new opening, and the siding is patched outside. It is decided with the cabinet plan, before anything is ordered.

Can you move my kitchen window to center it over a new sink?

Usually, yes. The opening is reframed with a new header where it needs to go, the old part of the opening is framed in, and the outside is patched. A large span is sized by an engineer, and JMB pulls the permit when the job needs one.

What window style works best in a remodeled kitchen?

A casement or an awning, cranked from a low corner, is easiest to open from behind a deep counter. A slider works on a wide, short opening. Watch the faucet and the upper cabinets: the crank handle and the open sash need room.

Should I replace the other windows while the kitchen is being remodeled?

It is a good time to price them. Putting them on the same order keeps color, glass and grilles matched across the house, and the quote lists each opening on its own line so you can add them now or later.

Who do I call with questions while the kitchen window is being installed?

JMB. You get one contact for the window work from the measure through the trim, and we work with whoever is running the rest of the remodel on dates, so the window is in before drywall and counters.
