Replace Windows During a Remodel — Ordered Early, Set Before Drywall
The walls are opening up anyway. Get the windows on the schedule now, so they are not the thing holding up drywall.

To replace windows during remodel work, decide sizes before framing is final, order early because lead time depends on the brand, and set the windows after any wall changes but before insulation and drywall. Trim goes on after drywall. JMB Builders sequences the window package into kitchen, living room and whole-floor remodels across the Twin Cities metro, with permits pulled when needed. Priced per project; photo reply within one business day or a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per project, each opening listed
- Windows set before insulation and drywall
- Size changes framed before the order

In a remodel the windows are a scheduling problem first. They are ordered to size, the lead time depends on the brand, and drywall cannot close until they are in. A window ordered late holds up the whole job.
Size changes come first. A kitchen window may drop to clear a new countertop and backsplash, a living room window may get wider, or a window may go away where cabinets now run. Each change is decided, framed and measured before the order. A wider opening needs a new header; a large span is sized by an engineer, and JMB pulls the permit when one is needed.
Then the order of work: wall changes and framing, windows set and flashed, insulation and air sealing at each window, drywall, then trim. Windows that are staying the same size can be replaced on the same visit so the whole floor matches.

How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of windows, and how many change size or move
- Headers and framing at changed openings
- Exterior patching: siding, stucco or brick at changed openings
- Brand, frame material and glass
- Interior trim: matching existing casing or a new style
- Windows outside the remodel added to the same order
Send the remodel plan or a sketch with the window changes marked, and a photo of each window involved.
How long it takes
Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote, so order as soon as sizes are final. Same-size swaps go in quickly; each resized opening adds about a day or more for framing and patching.

Situations and options
Same size, new window
The opening stays; the window is replaced while the room is torn up. Easiest to schedule and closes the same day.
Resized opening
Kitchen window raised for a backsplash, living room window widened. Framed with a header to size, then the window is set and the outside patched.
Rest of the house too
Windows outside the remodel added to the same order so colors and glass match from the new kitchen to the bedrooms.
Replace Windows During a Remodel — Ordered Early, Set Before Drywall: questions, answered
When should windows be replaced in a remodel?
After walls are moved and openings are framed, and before insulation and drywall. Order them as soon as the sizes are final, because lead time depends on the brand. Trim goes on after drywall.
Can a kitchen window be made smaller for new counters?
Yes. The opening is reframed to the new height, a shorter window is set, and the siding outside is patched where the old window was. It is decided before the order so the window arrives at the new size.
Should I replace all the windows during a remodel or only in the remodeled rooms?
If the other windows are near the end of their life, adding them to the same order keeps color and glass matching through the house. If they are fine, replace only the rooms you are opening up. Each window is a line on the quote.
Do I need a permit to change window sizes in a remodel?
Changing an opening usually means a permit, and the remodel may already have one. A wide new opening needs a header sized for the span, by an engineer when it is large. JMB pulls permits when needed.
Can you work with my remodel contractor's schedule?
Yes. We need the date framing is done and the date drywall starts. The windows go in between. Tell us who to coordinate with and we work to that schedule.
Do new windows get trim to match the remodel?
Yes. Trim goes on after drywall, either matching existing casing in the rest of the house or a new profile for the remodeled rooms. Painting is quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
