The door on an open lot takes the wind straight on, or the old door in town has a jamb that has been patched one too many times.

Entry door replacement in Princeton, MN covers older in-town homes and wind-exposed rural lots alike: we measure, order a prehung steel or fiberglass door through ABC Supply, take out the old unit, repair rot at the sill or jamb, set the new door in a sill pan with flashing and trim it to match the house. JMB Builders is based in Zimmerman. Priced per door; reply to your photos within one business day.

  • Priced per door, door included
  • Trim matched to older millwork
  • Rot at sill and jamb repaired

Princeton gives us two kinds of entry door jobs. Houses on rural lots outside town sit in the open, and the front door takes wind and driven snow with nothing in the way. Weatherstrip flattens, the threshold leaks at the corners, and a steel door that was not kept painted starts to rust along the bottom.

In the older homes near downtown and the Rum River, the door opening is often the problem. It has settled out of square, the jamb has been shimmed and patched over the years, and the original casing is wide stained wood that should not be torn off and replaced with a stock profile. We take care with that casing, or mill and finish new casing to match, so the new door looks like it belongs.

The install is the same in both: the old unit out, rot cut out and replaced, a sill pan down, flashing tape lapped at the sides and head, the new door shimmed plumb and square, foamed and sealed. We check with the City of Princeton building department about a permit before work starts and pull one when the job needs it.

Get a written quote for this job

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.

Photos (optional)

Up to 3: one wide shot of the area, one close-up of the opening or trim, one of anything you're unsure about.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • Photos of the door from both sides, a close-up of the threshold and one of the inside casing
  • Steel or fiberglass, glass or solid, and the color
  • Lockset and deadbolt finish, or hardware you already own
  • Paint or stain color if you want the door or trim finished — quoted as a separate line

What JMB supplies

  • Measurement and the order for a prehung door in the right size, swing and jamb width
  • Removal and haul-away of the old door and frame
  • Repair of rotted sill, jamb feet or subfloor
  • Sill pan, flashing tape, foam, sealant and shims
  • Exterior trim, and interior casing saved or matched to the original profile
  • Lockset, deadbolt, strike and weatherstrip set so it latches and seals
  • Photos of the finished door in your job folder

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • The door: steel or fiberglass, glass or solid, factory finish or primed
  • An out-of-square opening in an older home that needs reframing
  • Saving original stained casing vs. milling new casing to match
  • Rot at the sill and jamb once the old door is out
  • Adding a storm door on an exposed rural lot
  • Painting or staining, as its own line

Include a close-up of the inside casing if it is original wood; it tells us whether we save it or match it.

How long it takes

About a day on site for one door. An older opening that needs reframing, or casing that has to be matched, can add a day. The door is ordered after you approve the quote.

Situations and options

Rural lot, open exposure

A fiberglass door or a well-sealed steel one, a sill pan with a back dam, and a storm door if you want one for the winter wind.

Older in-town home

The opening is squared up and the original wide casing is saved or matched in profile, species and finish, so the door fits the house.

Highway-corridor home

A 1990s-or-newer builder door with failed seals. The prehung unit is replaced in the same opening, often adding glass or sidelites.

Entry Door Replacement in Princeton, MN for In-Town and Rural Homes: questions, answered

Do you replace front doors in Princeton, MN?

Yes. JMB Builders is based in Zimmerman, a short drive from Princeton, and replaces entry doors in town and on rural lots around it. The door is measured on site, ordered through ABC Supply, then installed and cased to suit the house. Start with photos (we reply within one business day) or a free in-home estimate.

Can you keep the original wood trim around my old front door?

Often, yes. We pull the casing carefully so it can go back on around the new door. If a piece splits or is too far gone, we match it as closely as stock or built-up casing allows and finish it to blend with the rest.

What entry door is best for a house out in the open?

Fiberglass does not dent or rust and handles sun and cold well; steel is fine if it is kept painted. What keeps the wind out is the install: a square frame, a compression weatherstrip that is not crushed, a threshold set to the sweep and a sill pan under it all.

My old front door is out of square. Can a new door still fit?

Yes. A prehung door is ordered to the rough opening and shimmed plumb and square inside it. If the opening has settled too far, we reframe the sides or the header first. We do not cut a new door to fit a crooked frame.

Do I need a permit to replace a front door in Princeton?

It depends on whether the opening changes. We check with the City of Princeton building department before we start and pull a permit when one is required.

Do you work in Cambridge and Zimmerman as well?

Yes. Zimmerman is our home base, and we replace entry doors in Cambridge, Big Lake and Elk River too. Rural lots around all of them get the same attention to wind and weather.
