Wood Front Door Bottom Rotted — Repair the Rail or Replace the Slab

Your solid wood front door is soft, split or black along the bottom, and you want to know whether it can be saved or has to go.

Reply within one business day. Or call / text 763-204-2099.

When a wood front door bottom is rotted, the fix depends on how deep it goes. Small soft spots on a painted door are dug out and filled with epoxy. A bottom rail that is split or soft through gets replaced. A slab with rot in the joints gets a new slab hung in the old frame. JMB Builders does all three across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per door, quoted from photos.

  • Priced per door
  • Epoxy, new bottom rail, or new slab
  • Jamb and threshold checked at the same time

Wood entry doors rot from the bottom up. Water runs down the face, sits on the bottom rail, and soaks into the end grain wherever the finish has worn off the bottom edge. The joint between the bottom rail and the stiles opens, more water gets in, and the rail goes soft or splits along the grain.

What it takes to fix depends on how far it went. We probe the rail, the joints and the bottom of each stile. Shallow soft wood on a painted door is cut back to sound wood, hardened and filled with epoxy, then shaped and primed. A rail that is soft through or split is taken off and a new one made to match, glued and pinned to the stiles. When the stiles are rotted too, or the door is stained and a patch would show, a new slab is hung in the old frame.

The same water usually hits the jamb bottoms and the threshold. We check both, because a repaired door on a rotted sill will rot again.

How do you want your quote?

Free, no obligation. Every quote is written and itemized, so you can compare it line by line.

What you supply

  • A photo of the whole door from outside and a close-up of the bottom rail
  • Whether the door is painted or stained
  • Paint or stain color, or leave the repair primed

What JMB supplies

  • Probe of the rail, joints, stiles, jamb bottoms and threshold
  • Epoxy consolidant and filler for shallow rot, shaped and primed
  • New bottom rail made to match, glued and pinned, when the old one is through
  • New slab hung in the existing frame when repair is not worth it
  • Bottom edge sealed and a new sweep fitted
  • Painting quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and paint it yourself

How it is priced: per door

Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:

  • Depth of the rot: surface, through the rail, or into the stiles
  • Painted door vs. stained door where a patch would show
  • Rail profile and panel style to match
  • New slab instead of repair, and its size and style
  • Jamb bottoms or threshold that also need work

A close-up of the bottom rail with a screwdriver pushed into the softest spot tells us most of it.

How long it takes

Epoxy repair: two visits, since the epoxy cures before shaping and primer. A new rail or slab: about a day of work, with the door secured in between.

Situations and options

Epoxy repair

Soft wood is cut out to sound fiber, hardened with consolidant and filled with epoxy, then shaped to the profile and primed. Best on painted doors with shallow rot.

New bottom rail

When the rail is soft through or split, it comes off the door and a new one is made to match, joined to the stiles and sealed on every face before it goes back.

New slab in the old frame

When the stiles are rotted or a stained door would show the repair, a new slab is fitted, hinged and bored to the existing frame and hardware.

Wood Front Door Bottom Rotted — Repair the Rail or Replace the Slab: questions, answered

Can a rotted bottom on a wood front door be repaired?

Often, yes. Shallow rot on a painted door is cut back and filled with epoxy. A rail that is soft all the way through can be replaced with a new one made to match. When the rot is in the stiles and joints too, a new slab is usually the better fix.

Should I repair or replace a wood front door with a rotted bottom?

Repair when the rot is limited to the bottom rail and the door is otherwise solid, square and worth keeping. Replace the slab when the stiles are soft, the joints are open up the door, or the door is stained and a patch would show.

Why do wood doors rot at the bottom?

Water runs down the face and sits on the bottom rail, and the bottom edge is end grain that soaks it up wherever the finish is gone. A worn sweep, a low threshold or no overhang above the door makes it worse.

Can you patch a stained wood door?

Epoxy and new wood do not take stain like the old door, so a patch usually shows. On a stained door, a replacement bottom rail in the same species can be stained close. If an exact look matters, a new slab is the cleaner answer.

Can a new wood slab fit my old door frame?

Yes. A slab is sized to the opening, then the hinge mortises and lock bores are cut to the existing frame and hardware. The frame, trim and threshold stay, as long as they are sound.

How do I keep a wood front door from rotting again?

Keep the finish up on all six sides, including the bottom edge, which is sealed when we do the repair. Keep the sweep in good shape and the threshold set to it. A storm door over a wood door can trap heat; check the door maker's guidance before adding one.
