Split Entry Window and Front Door Replacement — One Order
The split entry's front door is tired and the windows are the same age; you would rather pick colors once and have it done in one go.

Split entry window and front door replacement puts the house's windows and its entry door with sidelites in one order and one schedule. JMB Builders measures every opening and the door in one visit, orders them together so the exterior colors match, and installs them across the Twin Cities metro. Priced per project with every window and the door listed. Send photos for a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate.
- Windows and entry door in one order
- Door, sidelites and windows color-matched
- Line-item quote by opening

On a split entry the front door is the face of the house. It sits dead center, usually with one or two sidelites, and the big upper-level window is right beside it. When the door gets replaced alone, the new color rarely matches the old windows. When the windows get replaced alone, the old door looks older. Ordering them together solves that.
The door has its own puzzle: it opens onto a small landing with stairs going up and down, so the swing, the storm door and the lockset all have to clear the steps. The lower-level windows sit half below grade and the window over the stairs is high. We measure all of it in one visit, and the split level window page and the split entry door page cover each piece in more depth.
Install goes window by window, closed each day. The door gets its own day so the house is locked with the new door that night.

How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Number of windows on the upper and lower levels
- Door type: single, one sidelite or two; glass in the door
- Whether the door opening is widened for sidelites
- The tall window over the stairs and how it is reached
- Window line, color and glass package
- Rot at the door threshold or lower-level sills
How long it takes
Lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote; doors and windows can arrive at different times. On site: the door is about a day, most split-entry window sets two to four days.

Situations and options
Door and windows, one schedule
Everything arrives and goes in over one stretch. Best match on color and the least time with a crew at the house.
Door first, windows next
Order together for a matched color, install the door when it arrives and the windows when theirs do. Useful when the two lead times differ.
Add a storm door
A new storm door on a split-entry landing has to clear the steps and the handrail. It can go on the same order and the same day as the entry door.
Split Entry Window and Front Door Replacement — One Order: questions, answered
Should I replace my front door and windows at the same time?
If both are original, doing them together means one color choice, one order and one crew visit. The door and the windows next to it match from the street. If you only have budget for one now, the quote lists each opening so you can split it.
Can a new front door match the color of new windows?
Often closely, but door and window makers use their own color names and finishes. We pick from what both offer and show you the closest pairs before the order. A painted door can be finished to match exactly; painting is quoted as a separate line.
Can sidelites be added to a split entry door?
Sometimes. It means widening the opening, which can mean a new header and siding work on each side. We look at the framing at the measure and tell you whether it fits before anything is ordered. If a header has to change size it is sized by an engineer.
How long does a split entry window and door job take?
Once everything arrives, the entry door is about a day and most split-entry houses take two to four more days for the windows. The tall stair window and any rot at the lower-level sills add time.
Will the new door swing hit the steps on my split entry landing?
That is checked at the measure. The door swing, the storm door swing and the handle height are worked out against the landing and the first step so nothing catches. The order is placed with the swing you approved.
Do you need a permit for new windows and an entry door?
It depends on the city and the scope. A same-size swap often does not need one; changing an opening size usually does. When a permit is needed, JMB pulls it.
