Replace All Basement Windows — Every Hopper and Slider, One Trip
Six or eight rusted basement windows, all the same age, all frosting over every winter.

To replace all basement windows at once, JMB Builders measures every concrete opening on every side, orders the hoppers and sliders together, and sets them in one trip: old steel or wood frames out, bucks rebuilt where rotted, each window sealed to the block or poured wall and trimmed inside. One window can be upgraded to egress in the same project. Twin Cities metro, priced per window; photo reply within one business day or a free in-home estimate.
- Priced per window, every opening listed
- All sides done in one trip
- Optional egress upgrade on one opening

Basement windows in a Twin Cities house usually went in on the same day, so they fail together: rusted steel frames, wood bucks rotted where they touch the concrete, single glass that frosts. Replacing one at a time means a trip, a setup and a clean-up for each. Doing every one on all four sides at once means one measure, one order and one trip.
The single-window basement page on this site covers how each one is set. This page is about the project: walking every side of the foundation, listing each opening with its frame type, buck condition, well condition and inside finish, and deciding whether one of them should become an egress window while the crew is there.
That egress question is the big one. If a basement room is or will be a bedroom, an egress window means cutting the wall bigger, a new well and a permit. It is quoted as its own line so you can see it apart from the straight swaps.

What you supply
- Storage pulled a few feet back from every basement window
- A decision on whether any room needs an egress window
- Hopper or slider choice per opening, color and glass
- Your paint color for inside trim — Painting is quoted as a separate line — or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself.
What JMB supplies
- One measure of every basement opening on all sides, each listed on the quote
- Hoppers and sliders ordered together through ABC Supply
- Cut-out and haul-away of old steel or wood frames
- New treated or PVC-wrapped bucks where the old ones are rotted
- Sealant, low-expansion foam and exterior sealing to the concrete
- Interior returns, jamb extensions or a clean painted buck
- Egress upgrade on one opening if chosen, with the permit pulled
- Photos of every finished window in your job folder
How it is priced: per window
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- How many openings, and steel frames cast in the wall vs. wood bucks
- How many bucks have to be rebuilt
- Hopper vs. slider, sizes and glass
- Finished basement walls vs. unfinished concrete
- Window wells: debris, drainage or rusted wells to replace
- Whether one opening is cut larger for egress
Send a photo of each basement window from inside and from the well, plus one of each side of the house.
How long it takes
Three or four basement windows a day, so most houses are done in one to two days. An egress upgrade adds its own days for digging, cutting and the well.

Situations and options
Straight swap, every opening
Same size openings, new hoppers or sliders all around. The fastest version: no digging, no permit in most cities, and the basement is closed up each day.
All swaps plus one egress
Every opening swapped and one cut larger for a bedroom, with a new well. Permit pulled where the city requires one. The egress is its own line on the quote.
Swaps plus wells and covers
Rusted or shallow wells replaced and covers added while the windows are out. Quoted per well.
Replace All Basement Windows — Every Hopper and Slider, One Trip: questions, answered
Should I replace all my basement windows at once?
If they are the same age and failing, yes. One measure, one order and one trip covers every opening, and the windows match. If only one is broken, a single replacement is fine, but most basement windows in a house were set on the same day and age together.
How long does it take to replace all basement windows?
Most houses have six to ten basement windows, and three or four go in per day when the bucks are sound. Steel frames cut out of the concrete and rebuilt bucks take longer. An egress upgrade adds its own days for digging, cutting and the well.
Can one basement window be made an egress window during the project?
Yes. The wall is cut larger, a well you can climb out of is set, and the window is sized to code for a bedroom. JMB pulls the permit when the city requires one. It is listed as its own line so you can see its cost apart from the swaps.
Hopper or slider for every basement window?
It can vary by opening. Hoppers tip in from the top and suit small, square openings. Sliders suit wide, short openings. Keeping one color and glass package across all of them keeps the outside looking like one job.
Do I need to empty the basement for window replacement?
No, just pull storage a few feet back from each window. We lay drop cloths at each opening, cut out the old frame, and clean up concrete dust and debris before we leave each day.
Are basement windows priced per window?
Yes. Each opening is listed with its frame type, buck work, window and inside finish, so you can see what each one costs. Egress upgrades and new wells are separate lines.
