Online Window Quote vs In-Home Measure — When Each One Is Final
You want a number before anyone comes to the house, but you also do not want to order twenty windows off a phone picture.

Online window quote vs in home measure: an online or photo quote gets you a working number and the right questions, but it is not final, because frame depth, square, rot and the exact size only show up with a tape on site. JMB Builders offers both: send photos for a reply within one business day, or book a free in-home estimate. Nothing is ordered until every opening is measured in person. Priced per project.
- Photo quote: a working number
- Free in-home estimate: available any time
- Every opening measured in person before ordering

Replacement windows are made to order, to the eighth of an inch. A photo shows the style, the room, the trim and the wall around it. It does not show whether the frame is out of square, how deep the jamb is, whether the sill is soft, or whether the opening is a little bigger on one side than the other. Those are the things that decide the order size and the install method.
So the two steps do different jobs. The photo or online quote is for deciding whether you want to go further: how the house will be priced, which line fits, insert or full frame on which openings. The in-person measure is for the order: we measure each opening in three places across and three up, check square, probe the sill and note the wall type. The quote is firmed from those numbers.
On a whole-house job the measure also catches what photos miss: the one window behind a dresser, the basement unit that was never mentioned, the bathroom glass that needs to be tempered.

Three photos and a sentence is enough: a reply within one business day, or ask for a free in-home estimate. Or text the photos to 763-204-2099.
What you supply
- For a photo quote: one photo of each window inside and out, labeled by room
- For the measure: clear access to each window and its sill
- A list of any windows you want left out
- Painting: quoted as a separate line, or leave it primed and caulked and paint it yourself
What JMB supplies
- A reply within one business day to your photos
- A free in-home estimate when you would rather start there
- Every opening measured across and up in several places, checked for square and rot
- Wall type, trim and access noted for each opening
- A firm, line-item quote by opening built from the measure
- One order once the quote is signed, so colors and glass match
How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Openings that measure out of square or oversize
- Insert vs. full frame, confirmed at the measure
- Rot found in sills or jambs
- Tempered glass needed near doors, tubs or stairs
- Windows missed in the photos
A photo quote changes after the measure only for what the tape or the sill shows; we tell you which openings changed and why.
How long it takes
The measure visit runs window by window; most houses take an hour or two. The firm quote follows, then the order; lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote.
How your project works
- 1
Photos or a visit
Send a photo of each window for a reply within one business day, or book the free in-home estimate and skip the photos.
- 2
Working number
From photos you get how the house would be priced, which line fits and which openings likely need full frame.
- 3
In-person measure
Every opening measured in several places, checked for square and rot. Nothing is ordered before this.
- 4
Firm quote and order
A line-item quote by opening. Once signed, every window goes on one order.
Online Window Quote vs In-Home Measure — When Each One Is Final: questions, answered
Can I get a window quote online?
You can get a working number from photos. Send one photo of each window inside and out, labeled by room, and you hear back within one business day. The final price comes after every opening is measured in person.
How accurate is a virtual window quote?
It is accurate on the things a photo shows: style, count, room, wall type and the trim. It is not final on size, square, jamb depth or rot, which only show up with a tape on site. Changes after the measure come from those items and are explained opening by opening.
Do I need an in-home window estimate for a whole house?
Before ordering, yes. Replacement windows are made to the opening, and a whole house has too many openings to guess. The free in-home estimate can be your first step, or it can follow a photo quote.
What happens at a window measurement appointment?
We go window to window, measure each opening in several places across and up, check that it is square, probe the sill for rot, and note the wall type and trim. We answer questions about lines and glass along the way. The written quote follows.
Can I measure my own windows to get a quote?
Your measurements are a good start and help the first number. For the order itself we measure every opening ourselves, since a wrong size on a made-to-order window cannot usually be returned.
Is the in-home window estimate really free?
Yes. The in-home estimate is free, and so is the photo quote. You can use either one, or both, before deciding anything.
