Buy windows myself or through the contractor? On one or two windows, buying your own can work. On a whole house, it usually pays to have the contractor supply them, because one party then owns the measure, the order, the delivery check and the install. JMB Builders does both across the Twin Cities metro: full service with windows ordered through ABC Supply, or labor-only on windows you buy. Priced per project.
- Full service or labor-only, your call
- Full service: one party owns sizes and order
- Windows ordered through ABC Supply

When you buy your own windows, you own the order. You measure, or pay someone to; you pick the unit type, jamb depth and options; you take the delivery and check it. If a size is wrong, a sash is scratched or a unit is missing, you are the one dealing with the store, and the install waits. Special-order windows are often not returnable, so a wrong size can mean buying it twice.
On one window that risk is small. On twenty it adds up, and one bad unit holds up the whole house. When we supply the windows, we measure every opening in person, place one order through ABC Supply, check the units when they arrive, and handle the reorder with the supplier if something comes in wrong or damaged. You deal with one company.
Is it cheaper to buy them yourself? Sometimes the material line is lower, especially on a store sale. Store lines and distributor lines are not always the same windows, though, so compare the full quotes on the same list of openings. If you still want to buy your own, we install them labor-only and check your order before you place it.

How it is priced: per project
Quoted in writing from your photos, with a reply within one business day. What moves the number:
- Full service vs. labor-only
- Number and mix of openings
- Line and glass, whoever buys it
- Insert vs. full frame
- Interior and exterior trim scope
- Extra trips when a homeowner-bought unit arrives wrong or late
Ask us to price it both ways on the same openings: windows supplied, and labor-only on the windows you buy.
How long it takes
Full service: lead time depends on the brand and is written on the quote. Labor-only: we schedule once your windows are delivered and checked. Install runs several working days either way.

Buy Windows Myself or Through the Contractor? A Whole-House Answer: questions, answered
Should I buy my own windows for a whole house?
You can, but on a whole house the risk grows with the count. You own the measure, the order and the delivery check, and one wrong or damaged unit holds up the job. Having the installer supply them puts all of that on one company.
Is it cheaper to buy windows yourself?
Sometimes the material is cheaper, especially on a store sale. Store lines are not always the same as distributor lines, and wrong sizes or damage cost time and money. Compare full quotes on the same list of openings before deciding.
Who handles the warranty if I buy the windows?
The manufacturer's warranty covers the window itself, and the buyer is usually the one who registers it and files a claim. Read the brand's warranty document for its terms. Keep your receipts and the order paperwork.
What happens if a window I bought is the wrong size?
It goes back to the store if they will take it, and special-order windows often cannot be returned. The install for that opening waits for the replacement. That is why we check your order before you place it.
Will you install windows I bought myself?
Yes. JMB Builders installs homeowner-bought windows labor-only, with flashing, insulation and trim. Send photos or the order sheet and we check sizes and unit types before you buy.
Where do you buy windows when you supply them?
Through ABC Supply, a building-products distributor with branches in the metro and St. Cloud. We are an installer, not a dealer for any brand, and which lines are available is confirmed on your quote.
