Mastercraft is the name Menards puts on most of its doors: steel and fiberglass entry units, primed and prefinished interior prehungs in the common panel styles, French door pairs, and vinyl patio sliders. There are more Menards stores around the Twin Cities than any other big box, so we see a lot of Mastercraft. We install it as a labor-only job. We are an independent installer with no connection to Menards or the brand; the store sells the door and we hang it to the instructions in the box.
The Mastercraft catalog gives you choices the rack does not, and they matter to the install: a wider jamb for a thick wall, prefinished instead of primed, a fiberglass skin instead of steel, a French pair with an astragal already fitted. Order the right options and the install is clean. Order a narrow jamb for a thick wall and the inside needs an extension before it can be cased. We read the order for you before you pay, no charge.
At pickup, before it goes in the truck, look at the hinge edge for dents, check the label for the handing you wanted, and make sure the sill and weatherstrip are on the unit. A stock Mastercraft door with the wrap intact goes back to the store; a special order does not.

- Brickmould if you want a profile other than what came on an exterior unit
- Paint or stain color for primed doors and new casing if we are finishing them; quoted as its own line

- Door type: a steel or fiberglass entry unit vs. an interior prehung vs. a French pair or patio slider
- Rot at the sill or bottom of the jambs, common on exterior and garage service doors
- Jamb extensions when the ordered jamb does not reach the drywall
- Whether the opening fits the stock size or has to be reframed
- Painting or staining primed units, quoted as its own line
- Number of doors in the same trip; a whole-house interior set is priced far below single doors

How long it takes
One Mastercraft entry door: about half a day. Interior prehungs: four to eight a day. A French pair or a patio slider: most of a day.

Situations and options
Mastercraft steel and fiberglass entry doors
Prehung exterior units with a factory sill and weatherstrip. Set on a pan, hinge jamb plumbed, long screws into the stud, foamed, sealed, lock hardware hung and cased. A fiberglass skin that comes primed gets paint or stain as a separate line.
Mastercraft interior prehungs, primed or prefinished
Molded panel and flat-panel hollow-core or solid-core prehungs. Set with even reveals, shimmed at every hinge and the strike, cased both sides. Prefinished units stay in the wrap until they are hung; primed units get painted as a separate line.
Mastercraft French door pairs
Interior or exterior pairs with an astragal on the inactive door. Both jambs plumbed, the pair hung so the meeting edges line up, flush bolts set top and bottom, and the active door latched to the astragal.
Mastercraft vinyl patio sliders
Two-panel sliding doors with a nailing fin. Old slider out, subfloor checked, sill pan formed, frame set level, fin taped, panels and screen hung and the rollers adjusted so it glides and locks.

Who installs Mastercraft doors?
JMB Builders installs Mastercraft doors homeowners have bought at Menards, labor only, across the Twin Cities metro. We are an independent licensed Minnesota contractor, not a Menards installer and not tied to the brand. Entry, interior, French and patio doors: we check the label against your opening, remove the old door, set the new one, seal it if it is exterior, hang your hardware and case it. Do Mastercraft interior doors come prefinished?
Some do. Menards sells Mastercraft interior prehungs both primed and prefinished, and the order line or the tag says which. Primed doors need paint after they are hung, which we quote as its own line or you do yourself. Prefinished doors are done when hung, and we leave the wrap on until the unit is set so the finish is not marked during install.
Can you install a Mastercraft French door or patio door?
Yes. A French pair takes longer than a single door because both jambs have to be plumb and the two doors have to meet evenly at the astragal, with flush bolts set on the inactive door. A patio slider is a heavier two-person set on a sill pan with the frame dead level so the panel rolls straight. Either one is most of a day and we quote it from photos of the opening.
What should I check on a Mastercraft door at Menards pickup?
Before it goes in the truck: the handing on the label matches what you ordered, the jamb width matches your wall, the hinge edge and skin have no dents, the sill and weatherstrip are on the unit, and brickmould is there if it was supposed to be. Take a photo of the label and send it to us. A stock door with the wrap intact exchanges easily; a special order is yours once it leaves the store.
Can you install a Mastercraft door in a thick wall?
Yes. Mastercraft units can be ordered with a wider jamb to match a thicker wall, which is the clean way to do it. If the door already came home with the standard jamb and the wall is thicker, we add a jamb extension on the inside so the casing sits flat on the drywall. It is a small extra on the quote and it looks fine painted. Send a photo with a tape across the wall at the old jamb and we tell you which way to go.
What do I need to buy besides the Mastercraft door?
Lock hardware: a lockset and deadbolt for an entry door, a knob or lever for each interior door, a handle set for a patio slider if you want something other than the stock one. Mastercraft units do not include them. Interior casing, sill pan, flashing, foam and shims are not in the box either; we bring all of that. If we are painting, pick the color before install day.
