Menards sells a lot of doors in the Twin Cities: Mastercraft steel and fiberglass entry units, six-panel hollow-core interior prehungs, garage service doors, storm doors, and special-order units that ship to the store. What Menards does not sell is the install. That is the call we get: the door is bought, the old one is failing, and the homeowner wants a carpenter who does this every week. We install Menards doors the same way we install any door — old unit out, opening checked, new door shimmed plumb at every hinge, foamed, flashed if it is exterior, and cased.
The door you buy is only as good as the door you order. Most of the problems we see with Menards doors are not the door; they are the label. Wrong handing, a 4-9/16 jamb in a 2x6 wall, a 36-inch unit for a 34-inch rough opening. All of it is printed on the tag on the hinge side of the unit. Read it before you pay, or send it to us and we will read it for you.

- The door from Menards: prehung or slab, correct handing, jamb width and rough-opening size
- Lockset, deadbolt and hinges if they are not in the unit (most Menards entry units ship with hinges, not locks)
- Brickmould if the unit did not come with it and you want a specific profile
- Your paint or stain color if the door comes primed and you want us to finish it; painting is quoted as a separate line

- Resizing the rough opening because the door does not match what was there
- Whether you pick up the door or need us to bring it from the store
- Number of doors in the same visit — the second is always cheaper than the first

How long it takes
One exterior prehung door from Menards: about half a day. Interior prehungs: two to four in a day. Add a few hours if the sill or jamb framing needs repair.

Situations and options
Menards steel or fiberglass entry doors
Mastercraft and other prehung entry units. We pull the old door and casing, check the subfloor at the sill, set the unit in a sill pan with flashing tape, shim it plumb at every hinge, foam it and case it inside and out.
Menards interior prehung doors
Hollow-core or solid-core prehungs, six-panel or flat. We pull the old jamb, set the new unit with even reveals, shim behind each hinge and the strike, hang your hardware and case both sides. Whole-house swaps go faster per door.
Menards garage service doors
The steel door from the garage to the yard, usually rotted at the bottom of the jamb. We fix the rot, set the new prehung in a sill pan and get it sealed against snow. If the same trip includes the house-to-garage door, we handle the rated door too.

Who installs doors from Menards in the Twin Cities?
JMB Builders does. Menards sells the door; we do the installation as a labor-only job anywhere in the Twin Cities metro. You buy the door and any lock hardware, we bring the shims, foam, flashing, sill pan, casing and tools, and we haul away the old door. Send photos of your opening and the door label and we quote it within one business day.
What should I check on the Menards label before I buy a door?
Three things. Handing: stand on the outside (or the hallway side for interior doors) facing the door; if the hinges are on your right and it swings away from you, that is a right-hand inswing. Jamb width: 4-9/16 inch for a 2x4 wall with half-inch drywall, 6-9/16 inch for a 2x6 wall. Rough opening: the label lists it; it should be about two inches wider and one inch taller than the door slab, and it has to fit inside your framing. Send us a photo of the tag and a photo of your old door with a tape on it, and we will confirm all three.
Can you pick up the door from Menards for me?
We can bring it from the store on the day of the install if that is easier than borrowing a truck, and we add the trip to the quote. Most homeowners have Menards deliver it or pick it up themselves and leave it in the garage. Either way, leave it in its packaging and upright until we get there so the jamb stays square.
Does the Menards door come with everything you need to install it?
A prehung entry unit comes with the jamb, hinges, sill and weatherstrip, and usually brickmould or a nailing flange. It does not come with a lockset or deadbolt, a sill pan, flashing tape, foam or interior casing. We bring all of that. Interior prehungs come with the jamb and hinges but no casing, no knob and no stop moulding on some lines. Check the box; if something is missing we tell you before we start.
What if I already bought the wrong size or handing?
Tell us before install day. Menards will usually exchange a stock door that has not been opened. A wrong handing on an interior prehung can sometimes be flipped by re-hanging the door on the other jamb leg, but the strike and stop have to be moved and it is rarely worth it on an exterior unit with a factory sill. A wrong jamb width can be fixed with a jamb extension on the inside. We tell you the cheapest way out.
Do you install Menards doors that were special ordered?
Yes. Special-order units are the ones we most want to see the order sheet for, because they cannot be returned. Before you submit the order, send us a photo of the opening and the old door and we will check the size, handing, jamb depth and swing so it arrives right. Once it is at the store, the install is the same job as a stock door.
