Home Depot and Lowe's both sell installation, but it runs through a third-party installer, the scheduling is slow, and the price is often more than the door. Plenty of Twin Cities homeowners buy the door in the aisle or special-order it at the millwork desk and then look for a carpenter to hang it. That is us. We install what you bought — JELD-WEN, Masonite, ReliaBilt, Therma-Tru, whatever the tag says — as a labor-only job with no markup on a product we did not sell.
The difference between a good store door and a bad one is mostly what happens at the opening. A steel prehung that is set without a sill pan will rot the subfloor in a few Minnesota winters. An interior prehung shimmed only at the top hinge will sag and stop latching by spring. We set every door the way we would set one from a lumberyard: pan, flashing, shims at each hinge and the strike, foam, casing, then adjust until it closes with one finger and latches.
What you supply
- The door from Home Depot or Lowe's: prehung or slab, right handing, jamb width and rough-opening size
- Lockset, deadbolt and any hinges not included with the unit
- Brickmould or exterior trim if you want a profile other than what shipped with the door
- Your paint or stain color if the door comes primed and you want us to finish it; painting is quoted as a separate line

Quoted in writing from your photos within one business day. What moves the number:
- Prehung unit vs. a slab fitted to your existing jamb
- Exterior door with sill pan, flashing and brickmould vs. an interior door
- Rot or framing repair at the opening, common at older entry and garage service doors
- Resizing the rough opening when the new door is a different size from the old one
- Sidelites, transoms or double units, which take longer to set square
- Number of doors in the same trip — a whole-house interior swap is cheapest per door
Send a photo of the order printout or the label on the hinge side of the unit with your opening photos and the quote covers the whole job.
How long it takes
One prehung entry door: about half a day. Interior prehungs: two to four a day. A door with sidelites, or an opening that needs framing repair, adds a few hours.

Situations and options
In-stock prehung doors
The units on the rack in standard sizes: 32 and 36 inch entry doors, 24 to 36 inch interior prehungs, 4-9/16 jamb. Check the handing on the tag before it goes in the cart; we can confirm it from a photo of your old door.
Special-order doors from the millwork desk
Custom sizes, 6-9/16 jambs, sidelites, transoms, fiberglass with a specific glass. These cannot be returned, so send us the order form before you sign it and we check the rough opening, jamb depth and swing against your wall.
Curbside delivery, door still in the wrap
The store drops the unit in the driveway. Get it inside or under cover, keep it upright and leave the packaging on. On install day we open it, check for shipping damage before the old door comes out, and set it.
Door slabs from the aisle
Bare hollow-core or solid-core slabs with no jamb. We fit the slab to your existing jamb: hinge mortises, lock bore, edges planed for even margins. Best when your jambs and casing are worth keeping.

Who installs doors bought at Lowe's or Home Depot?
JMB Builders does, as a labor-only job across the Twin Cities metro. Buy the door at either store, in stock or special order, and we install it: old door out, opening checked, new unit set plumb, sealed, hardware hung and cased. You are not tied to the store's installer program or its schedule. Send photos of the opening and the door label and we quote it within one business day.
Is Home Depot door installation cheaper if I hire my own installer?
We cannot quote the store's program; you will have to compare their number with ours. What we can say is that our price is labor only, per door, with the sill pan, flashing, foam, shims and casing included, and no allowances that get added later. Send the opening photos and the label, and you get a firm number to compare within one business day.
What if the door arrives damaged or is the wrong size?
We open it and check it before the old door comes out, so a bad unit never leaves you with a hole in the wall. Dented steel skins, a cracked jamb leg or a wrong handing go back to the store; stock doors usually exchange without trouble if the wrap is intact. If the size is off by a small amount we can often adjust the rough opening or add a jamb extension, and we tell you the cost before we do it.
Does the Home Depot or Lowe's door include hardware?
Entry prehungs include the jamb, hinges, sill and weatherstrip, and often brickmould. They do not include the lockset or deadbolt. Interior prehungs include the jamb and hinges but no knob or casing. Neither store's door comes with a sill pan, flashing tape, foam or shims; we bring all of that. Buy the lock hardware at the same time as the door so the finish matches and it is on site install day.
Can you install a door from Lowe's if the old opening is a different size?
Yes, within reason. Going a couple of inches smaller means adding a jack stud and filler and patching the drywall or siding. Going wider means a new header and a bigger opening in the wall, which is a framing job we quote from photos and sometimes a site visit. Before you buy, measure the old slab and the rough opening and send it over; matching what is there is always cheapest.
Do you install exterior doors from Home Depot in winter?
Yes. The old door is out and the new one is set the same day, usually within a couple of hours, so the house is open for a short time. We foam and seal it the same visit. Cold weather changes nothing about how the door goes in; the only thing we watch is that low-expansion foam and caulk are rated for the temperature we are working in.
