Masonite makes the molded interior doors on the rack at every big-box store and lumberyard in the Twin Cities: two-panel and six-panel styles, the shaker-look flat panels, the arched-top styles, hollow core and solid core, sold as prehung units or bare slabs. Most of the calls we get are a whole-house swap, the seventies flush doors out and a matching set of Masonite panels in. We do it as a labor-only job. We are an independent installer, not a Masonite dealer, and we do not sell the doors. You buy them; we hang them.
A prehung Masonite unit is a jamb, hinges and a slab already mortised and hung. The install is pulling the old casing and jamb, setting the new unit in the opening with the hinge side plumb, shimming behind every hinge and at the strike, nailing it off, and casing both sides. Done right the reveals are even on all three sides and the door stays wherever you leave it. A slab is a bare door for your existing jamb: the hinge mortises get cut to match, the lock is bored, and the edges get fit so the margins are even.
Masonite interior doors come primed, not painted. The primer is not a finish, so painting is quoted as its own line on every Masonite job, or leave them primed and caulked and paint them yourself.

- Hinges if you bought slabs and want new ones instead of reusing the old

How long it takes
Prehung Masonite doors: four to eight in a day depending on casing. Slabs into old jambs: three to five a day. A whole house is usually two days plus painting.

Situations and options
Whole-house prehung swap
Every interior door replaced with a matching Masonite set: bedrooms, baths, closets, the linen and the basement door. We pull each old unit, set the new prehung with even reveals, case both sides, hang the hardware and move to the next room. Painting follows as its own line.
Slabs into existing jambs
When the jambs and casing are worth keeping, a bare Masonite slab is fitted to the old frame: hinge mortises cut to match, lock bored, edges planed for even margins. No casing comes off, so there is no drywall touch-up.
Solid-core Masonite doors
The heavier version of the same styles, for bedrooms and offices where sound matters. They need three hinges seated on solid shims and a jamb that is nailed off well, or they sag. We set them the same way we set an exterior door.
Split-jamb prehung units
Some Masonite prehungs come with a two-piece jamb and the casing already on. They install faster in a wall of the right thickness and need no separate casing, but they have less room for adjustment, so the openings have to be close to square.

Should I buy Masonite prehung doors or slabs?
Prehung if the old jambs are beat up, out of square, or you want new casing anyway; the whole opening gets replaced and the result is clean. Slabs if the jambs and casing are in good shape and you want to keep the trim and avoid drywall touch-up; each slab is fitted to its jamb, which is more labor per door but no demolition. Send photos of a couple of doors and jambs and we tell you which way to go.
Do Masonite doors come painted?
No. Masonite interior doors come primed white, and the primer is a base coat, not a finish. They mark easily until they are painted. We quote painting the doors and new casing as its own line, done after the doors are hung and caulked, or you can leave them primed and paint them yourself. Some lumberyards offer prefinished doors on special order; if yours are prefinished, tell us so we handle them with the wrap on.
Can you replace all the doors in my house with Masonite doors in one visit?
Yes, and it is the most common Masonite job we do. A typical house has eight to fourteen interior doors, and prehung swaps run four to eight a day depending on how much casing there is. We work room by room, so no door is off for more than an hour or two, and we haul the old doors and trim away. Painting follows as a separate line once the caulk has set.
What is a split-jamb Masonite door?
A prehung door whose jamb comes in two halves that slide together from each side of the wall, with the casing already attached to each half. It is built for a specific wall thickness, so it only works when your wall matches. The advantage is speed and no separate casing to cut. The drawback is less room to shim, so it wants an opening that is close to square. A flat-jamb prehung with loose casing is more forgiving on older houses.
What hardware do I need to buy with Masonite interior doors?
One knob or lever per door: passage for hallways and closets, privacy for bedrooms and baths, and a dummy handle for the fixed side of a double door. Prehung units come with hinges already on; slabs do not, so buy three hinges per slab or plan on reusing the old ones. Buy everything in the same finish and have it on site install day so the strikes are set once.
